If the women hit a men should they hit back in self-defense

I had a girlfriend go bananas and start pounding on me and punching and my basic instinct was tested and I did not hit back. I just constrained her and escorted her to the door. However, I think that men need to be careful when out, say on the street, and confronted by an unknown woman getting in his face because you really don’t know what kind of training she might have. So in that case I think men need to override that protect-women instinct and apply their defensive fight skills as if she is a man and I emphasize defensive.

If it is actually self defense, yes. Unfortunately eye-for-an-eye is fair in concept but not so much legally. If she hits you once and you have ample opportunity to leave - for the sake of saving your own skin - walk away. If she's beating on you though, she won't let you leave, etc?

My boyfriend tried that on me once, I got angry and justifiably slapped him and he hit back. I called the cops on him the very next minute and got him arrested. That shit doesn't fly with me. He started begging me to drop charges but it was too late and I wanted him to learn a lesson. After he got out of jail he apologized and we moved on. Let's say he never made the same mistake again.

Look buddy, this isn't up for discussion, I stand by my decision, even his own parents sided with me. He had time to think about what went wrong when he was sitting in jail and he more than learned from his mistakes. His attitude has gotten much better afterwards.
