When I was young (11) my father was diagnosed with lung cancer. My mother sister and I took care of him after we stopped the chemotherapy and he unfortunately passed away two years later when I was only 13 years old. Im 22 years old now and I still miss him just as much as I did when I was younger. I have lots of things to remember him by but one thing is that he didn't really pass down anything of his that I can keep with me wherever I go. Believe it or not, I got the idea from the show "The Deadliest Catch". After the captain of the Cornelia Marie passed away, in the next season his son Jake was showing the camera men a necklace he got to remember his dad by that he wears wherever he goes. What it is was a cremation necklace. He took a very, very small amount of his fathers ashes and put it inside the necklace. After the ashes go in, it is sealed up and usually there is a glue you use to make sure that it doesn't open up again, or to make sure nothing else will go in. Seeing as I don't really have anything of my fathers that I could wear everyday, I thought this would be a cool idea so that I could have something to remember him by everywhere I go. I know most people usually have other things like family heirloom necklaces or rings, however I didn't have anything of the sort. I know other ways to do this would be to send in some ashes to a company which can turn it into a stone or some sorts. That wasn't something I wanted to do because of the cost and the idea of if they were handling the ashes correctly. I have a necklace similar to the one pictured above however its just a solid black rectangle rather than a cylinder. I don't tell a lot of people about this because it is a touchy subject to me, plus I'm sure that some people would be a little bit creeped out by the idea. However, I wanted to hear what you nice people think about this. If it's something you think you might do or if you think it's totally weird and why. Let me know, Thanks, -Casey

I work in jeweler and this is something that has become somewhat popular in the last couple years. It's kind of a cool idea, but in all honesty it sort of creeps me out, not so much that it's someone's remains but more that it's such a special item, I hate having to do anything at all with them. It just makes me nervous. Whatever you get though try to get something that's a higher quality, I'm not sure what you have right now. A lot of the ones I've seen are base metal and that doesn't usually hold up well to years of everyday wear. Whatever you get though be sure to have it checked by a jeweler ever six months or so, jewelry is not indestructible and does wear. You don't want to lose it because a jump ring came loose and opened or the bail wore through. And with a lot of those pieces they're not secured with more than glue or a threaded closure so don't shower/swim or sleep with it on.
I don’t think it’s creepy.. everyone deals with death in a different way and if this is something that reminds you of him and brings comfort then why not? It’s a very personal thing 😊 My sister died when we were younger and my mum kept her ashes at home for a long time. She finally agreed to put her into a Memorial wall a few years ago, but kept some of her ashes which I had turned into a diamond pendant for her. No one can understand her grief, how she chooses to deal with it is hers and keeping part of my sister close (while some may see as distasteful) if obviously an important part for her. If it makes you feel good then do it 😊
I don't think it's creepy. I mean, people get them for their pets too as it's one of the upsells that every veterinary offers when you have to put down a pet. Quite frankly, it's more green than cemeteries and I think that we're going to see more of this anyway as land in urban centers gets more and more expensive and people start asking why we dedicate these huge plots of land just to bury people.
