What is your opinion of this 1951 Advertisement?

The world has moved on. That image of the world and the dynamic between the sexes and in marriage has completely shifted away, partly for the better in my opinion. But that was 67 years ago, at which most of those social-cultural changes had not yet happened. Here, until 1956 the "Wet handelingsonbekwaamheid" was in effect. It effectively means that married women were a) not allowed to travel b) not allowed to work and c) not allowed to have a bank account. So in those times this advertisement made sense, the role of the women was effectively at home.

So in those times it was the norm, it was the simple reality of how marital relationships worked. The social-cultural changes hadn't happened.

I don't agree with it in these times considering I think women should work proper jobs as well, rather than staying at home. Too much talent would be wasted if it was different. But that's judging the world 67 extremely influential years after it happened. Therefore I don't approve of the message in the advertisement, although people should decide for themselves in individual relationship. But it's unfair to judge a society and advertisements when the norms and values, especially in relations between the sexes, was completely different.

Therefore offensive is not really appropriate to me, nor funny. I frankly don't care either way and I got it. But I'll go for "it's true", because it was true in those times. Like I said, until 1956 married women here were literally not allowed to work. The advertisement states reality at that time.

Pathetic, it's hilarious. Even more so that it was truly believed in those times... And it gets even better!!! Because I see that men still select the option that it's true on this poll. It was a different time back then, I don't think it was intended to be as offensive as it might appear today, I'd say it fitted the times for the values people lived by. I mean if you look at today's advertisements geared towards men they still talk about being a man women will love in terms of being a dominant male - just in a different way. Advertising will always play on feelings and intrinsic drives to be desired by the opposite sex because sex sells. It's basic human psychology.

It is a mistake to judge something that happened 67 years ago by today's standards. In 1951, men did not think that they were demeaning women with such advertisements. They sincerely believed that what they were saying was true and that their role was to protect women from the harshness of the world.

Of course it's offensive that men would have to spend money on their own leashes to appease women. Here, tie this knot around your throat so she can better control you, and kill you when you displease her. Anyone else even notice that she makes him get all dressed up, tie on and hair perfect then get back in bed until she permits him to get up? He's a slave to her in every way. He's shackled to the bed at the ankle, conveniently out of sight. See how he has to hold his hands back while she brings him rations? He's not even allowed to touch her. This kind of advertising has been used to manipulate men to do women's bidding for generations.

Back then everyone wasn't scared to be themselves and people didn't support weirdos like trans people. Also, nowadays it's the opposite. It's a woman's world these days. It's easier for women to go to college, get jobs and they always come out on top when it comes to divorce. Also they can abort a guy's baby without his consent, and cry rape and get innocent men in prison. Women outnumber men in college, and women in the ages 20 to 30 earn more than men. The education and justice system severely cripple men and it's way easier to be a woman these days then men. But no one cares about that. They support bs feminist teachings like the mythical wage gap and rape culture, and keep going back to a time where real misogyny took place to fuel their argument for today, proving that modern feminists are man haters and are running out of things to fight for as females are now superior to males in our society. 1950's - a man's world, 20 18 - females world. After so many years the genders are still not equal.

He works 9-10 hours a day, she works maybe 1-2 hours a day, and she gets to stay home and listen to music or whatever while she does it.

I don't understand why everyone thinks housewives had it so hard and their lives were such drudgery. I've taken care of babies and small children before and it's easy as fuck, it's not work at all, and any woman who thinks that it is hard has obviously never done a REAL day's work in her life.

I mean that is how things were viewed but its not like every man treated every woman in this manner. I mean imagine in 60 or 70 years when someone looks back to when spreading your legs on a bus to stop your balls from being crushed was a display of dominance and part of how the patriarchy kept women submissive. It was that kind of attitude at the time. Mad Men kind of reflects it, too. Even going into the 70's, commercials would usually have women who were clueless on how to clean their house properly, and had to have a man show them how to do it, even tiny men, like the Tidy-Bowl man.

I like the add. Every man should be fed in bed, by his girl kneeling beside him. Actually, I find it funny, as it is so out of date. I can't imagine any girl I know being willing to do that. Women have come a long way, though there is farther to go.

I just have one thing to say i always hated girly femininity, to me the less "ladylike" and the more tomboy a woman is the more attractive she'll be i hate "holding out for a hero" women.
