I believe you are better off to be kind to them, BUT... don't be a pushover or a simp, know your worth, and know your standards.
Stay with your standards, and people will respect you for it.

Being kind is not about paying off. It's about what you want to be as someone who is responsible for who you are.
Some people are sociopaths and will keep taking advantage of you thinking you are a pushover. They don’t care how you feel. You got to stand up to them.

Kindness is its own reward. I totally disagree that the haters are the ones you ultimately remember.
I think kindness does pay off, but you can't let people walk all over you either.
It only pays off if you're happy with the outcome at the end of the day.
