Learning about Jesus, Catholicism, and Apologetics.
Physics and Astronomy.
Anything having to do with East and Southeast Asia, including culture, languages, products, music, etc.
Languages in general.
Firearms and weapons.
I wouldn't say I'm obsessed with anything, but I have been on a bit of a Mission: Impossible kick recently. The movies are great (most of them at least) and I'd like to watch the original TV show.
And I would like to learn more about astronomy, physics, and philosophy.
And it's great that you're interested in learning about the Catholic Church. Are you converting or thinking about it? If you have questions, feel free to PM me!
As a historian, having recently watched the series Barbarians on Netflix I got into a Roman craze, so I'm brushing up on my facts there. It's my favorite empire in history!
What makes it your favorite?
Oh boy, now you're in for it ;)
The scope of the Empire, one of the largest and richest in history, the fact that they managed to unite Europe with hundreds of different kingdoms, peoples and tribes constantly warring. It's revolutionary military structure, developing tactics still used today, such as the testudo formation used by SWAT forces. The stunning architecture, the ancient Latin language, the look of a post-Marian reforms legion (the most commonly portrayed look of roman soldiers) which is just glorious.
I also like what they gave the world. Unity and order under Pax Romana, roads, baths, aqueducts, architecture as mentioned, tools to measure time, improved agriculture, a common tongue for Europe, superior military, flourishing trade, prosperity, extensive and effective law system. The fact that they allowed local authorities to remain in rule, allowed freedom of religion and tradition and only stepped in with the Legion if insurrection or attacks occurred. And even allowed for provinces to appeal legal cases to Roman authority to resolve and help with.
And the structure of Roman armies where merit could see you advance no matter your background. The incentives they gave to join the legion, being awarded with land, wealth and political influence if serving well and surviving the established term, this was entirely unique for any military of that time. Training was rigorous, all inclusive and thorough, so that no one was simply used as cannon fodder, which also bred really tough, brave and strong men.
I'm not a blind fanboy, I know the Romans had faults. They were often incredibly brutal, (though an iron hand was necessary to maintain their domains), had a big slave society and often an issue with supremacist attitudes. The one major minus point also of course, being their persecution of Christians. But all empires and powers have their faults. And when looking at the rest of the world at this time as a researcher, Rome really was the light. And Jesus never encouraged uprising against it, quite the opposite he demanded that the people pay their taxes and honour their emperor. And it was roman roads and the common Greek tongue they created that allowed for saints like Paul to spread the Gospel.
All together the Roman Empire was just epic. I'm going to do the Ancestry. com test for Christmas and even though I am a purebred Scandinavian I am honestly hoping to find some Italian descent xD one of my dreams has always been to have traveled back in time and find out what it was like to fight in a legion. ROMA VITRIX! (Victorious Rome).
I've been a big Alex Trebek fan for ages. When I learned of his death on November 8, I started binge-watching my collection of classic/recorded 'Jeopardy!' episodes. I guess I'm "in mourning" and regret not having met Mr. Trebek in person.
Thanks @Physics-Man for the MHGirl pick. :)
