My first thought was that it was like Braille on drive-up ATMs- there because it's there on EVERY shifter knob. But then, what other vehicles have transmissions? I suppose if you're unfamiliar with this car's particular layout (speaking as a former truck driver, there IS more variation than you'd think), but on the whole, what the hell?

I can't imagine what useful purpose this would serve. All I can think is to read the positions at night or by not looking down. Typically when you drive a stick shift. You learn to feel the shifter positions pretty quick. Also what percentage of sighted people know braille?

If someone is using a manual shift, they will not have enough time to process the tactic impression of the gear number in order to shift within a short enough time to avoid problems. Sighted or not, shifting must be virtually instantaneous. Hence automatic transmissions.

Blind or not anyone can drive a car & but not everyone can avoid hitting shit. I still can’t believe that they sell shifter knobs with Braille on them.

It's bad enough that I've never felt comfy being in charge of a huge, speeding chunk of metal that could easily take a life if I made a simple, tiny mistake, and that was long BEFORE anybody ever HEARD of cell phones!! Now, I'm gonna HAVE to get a license because, the guy I depend on, these days, to get me anywhere is getting a bit old and won't be driving too terribly much longer!! So now, I'M gonna to have to deal with fending off all those self-centred ASSHOLES whose phone calls are more important than road safety?
I can't TELL YOU how many times I've seen someone get into their car, start making a phone call and then drive away!! What, you couldn't make that call at home? The world is full of mobile phone booths!!
I see they're now building cell phones into the cars so you don't have to hold the phone while driving. I'm not 100% sure that's better.
I don't have, need or WANT a cell phone!! At the moment, I'm using my aunt's because I HAVE to! There's no house phone. But, the ONLY time I use it is in the morning while I'm waiting for the kettle to boil and I check the weather and listen to any messages that might've come in. I'm lucky if I get or make 1 or 2 calls a week! So, I only have it turned on about 15:00 a day!

You serious? if you have eyesight so bad to the point you need braille then you probably shouldn't be driving. They are also mostly for the blind and if you are blind you should not be behind a motor vehicle.

it's probably a really good idea to let blind people drive... that could be a nice idea for a future where cars can drive autonomously very reliably.

As long as they are not in control of the wheel and brakes then they can be my shifter from the passenger side listening to the engine revs to shift for me

Yes, of course it's a good idea; so long as the blind can actually see the road they're driving on, or the traffic lights when they change from green to red or red to green.
