Here's a quote from the great Teddy Roosevelt:
" โPatriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the president or any other public official, save exactly to the degree in which he himself stands by the country. It is patriotic to support him insofar as he efficiently serves the country. It is unpatriotic not to oppose him to the exact extent that by inefficiency or otherwise he fails in his duty to stand by the country. In either event, it is unpatriotic not to tell the truth, whether about the president or anyone else.โ
It's a great quote, but the problem is, it's difficult to separate "country" from "government" especially when the government is doing horrible things. And since roughly HALF the people in a country at any given time disagree with their government, the word "patriot" gets clouded.
So to me, I have to focus on telling the TRUTH. If you believe in the ideas, and the ideals that your country stands for, you should be willing to know the truth about if your government is living up to them. You should be willing to know if your leaders are engaged in administering and safeguarding those ideals, as is their duty. To IGNORE their failure to do so, is the most UNPATRIOTIC thing you can do. To speak the truth WHEN they are failing to do so is not criticism of your country, it's telling the truth about its leaders.
No matter how disappointed I am in our politicians no matter how bad they get someday we will all do something about it and fire their asses but I don't care who you are if you live in my country I don't care who you are what color you are if you're male or female if you're fat or thin if somebody is threatening you or us as a whole I will back there Play I Will not allow it to happen and it's the same time I don't care what country I was in if I see somebody getting picked on and they cannot defend themselves I'm going to stop it

Well your question is a very important question because we are being manipulated and taking down the wrong path I believe just because I believe it doesn't mean that I'm right but if I am right no matter who we are we need to come together because it's going to be our own identity our own people that are destroying us look how far in the last past 10 years we have done nothing but go downhill I believe that we've been sold out and it's going to be us we the little people did bring it back because we little people are the ones that make this country run any way our government is sells us out any which way to get that money to get reelected but anyway I appreciate your question
Before saying how patriotic I am, I must say that my origins are not French. My ancestors fled from Spain, but us here are some incredible things, France welcomed us, to give work, allowed to live in peace and to have something to nourish us, it also allowed us to have an education by going to school. It allowed us to be able to be part of its history, of its culture. I am the compatriots of St Louis, of Richelieu, of Louis XIV, of Napoleon, and of great artists and scientists who have helped and shaped the world. My parents have always taught me that, to love France. When, for example, during a historical battle, France faces Spain, my heart is on the French side. This is the love I have for my country.
Here is a sentence which could very well summarize my thought of the historian March Bloch "France, finally, will remain, whatever happens, the homeland from which I cannot uproot my heart. I was born there, I drank from sources of its culture, I made its past my own, I only breathe well under its sky, and I in turn tried to defend it as best I could. "

Haha thanks. Strangely enough I was having a text conversation about this to someone last year. We are all part of a delicate cycle. There have literally been volcanic eruptions that affect dozens of countries thousands of miles away and cause blackouts. The melting glaciers will rise MY sea levels which is based on the other side of the world. We are not living on floating planets separate from each other, and earth is not the universe. If you live in a country and a big problem arises there will be a domino effect to mine. Itโs not even based on moral judgement, itโs a scientific one.

Patriotism is a HUGE word and it can mean a lot of different things to a lot of people. Nazi SS soldiers were patriots of Hitler's believe and what he stood for, while at the same time you had patriots in the United States and Soviet Union who shared very common, but at the same time different believes in standing up against the Evil. There is no right or wrong patriotism, but there is a right or wrong believe that fuels that patriotism. There was a strong patriotism in United States from 1940's to early 2000's after that, it went down the hill, because United States stopped representing what it once did. Look at China now, their patriotism is at the highest point in their entire history, they are ready and willing to fight and die for their country. Without strong believe there is no strong patriotic spirit, no matter if it is good or bad.

I'm a 50% patriot. I don't think this is a good thing because patriotism means low cost for the soldier's lives. In the past, before the first world war people used to carry over kingdoms and feuds with no sense of belonging and because of that the relationships didn't have boundaries.
If a king or a monarch wanted to start a war with the other kingdoms, they were forced to spend a lot of money into their private army and most likely face ostracism of their population.
Now, politicians, in the name of patriotism, are able to send us to war for a very low cost, they will be seen as great leaders and you will be shamed for not wanting to fight for your own "nation".

The US was formed with a nearly a 50/50 split between patriots and loyalists. Two centuries later, we were attacked by Japan and waiting for Germany to do the same. We still didn't have 100% behind World War II.
Now, after Vietnam and a absolutely shameful pull out in Afghanistan... Yeah, who's really behind our government's decisions anymore?
It's tough to be a Patriot, but in the basic tenants that this country founded itself onโI'm a patriot.

I'm not unpatriotic but I don't have rose-colored glasses on. I don't hate America but there are a lot of problems in this country and improvements are definitely needed. To me patriotism means making decisions that are in America's best interests and fixing the problems that exist.
Sadly I'm not as patriotic as I should be. However, I can't keep my mouth shut when someone says a lie about my country. They really get to my nerves!!! 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
Being patriotic means being proud of your country, your people, your history but at the same time being aware of the problems that your nation has and its flaws.
I care, but do not get caught up in symbols and other shit like that. People have freedoms and when you get worried about what others do to a flag or during a national anthemโฆ. that crosses a line where they are trying to force it onto others.
This country has done some amazing things and some amazingly terrible things and our collective history is all of it, not just the cherry picked parts that we like.
So I defend it when it needs defending and criticize it when appropriate too. If you canโt do both I question whether you are as much of a patriot as you claim to be.
I'm patriot enough that I'd go with these guys.

I think I'm very patriotic. I don't wave the flag around or espouse my nation's perfection. I point out its flaws and do what little I can to correct them and change it for the better. To me, patriotism does not mean unconditional love for one's nation. It means to actively work to improve one's nation for the love of your countrymen.
Not a very patriotic person, in general. But I'm a fan of landscapes and architecture and people, rather than the intangible concept of nationality.

As a Christian I take no part in the political affairs of any country. Patriotism is an act of human worship and idolatry, since you pledge your life to a person, and a flag, both of which are powerless to change what is wrong with the world.
Instead, I patiently await the battle of Armageddon, when Jesus subdues all enemies of God and establishes his kingdom here on the earth.
I'm patriotic to the ideals that founded America - the Constitution and the Bill Of Rights. Sadly, these aren't being respected very much today - politicians break the law openly and get away with it, and violate their oaths of office 20 times a day. I'm only too aware of that - but it hasn't diminished my commitment to those original ideals.

UK here. My country is an embarassment right now. When we come to our collective senses I will go back to being patriotic again. However if Germany invaded tomorrow I would support them. I like Germany, and so will everyone else when they see how it works.

Not much of a patriot
At school they told us to never forget the people that fought and died for us to have a future. I admire them yes but honestly I wouldn't die for my country today. I just can't believe that people die just for land that makes up a country. I wouldn't be proud if my dad was called to fight in war, I honestly wouldn't want him to. Killing someone for the sake of peace is just terrible and then we must be proud for such deeds. I don't get it.
This world is in BIG trouble in every way. We are all screwed up!
