No, I don't like having a strong association to anything related to the government. (I say that because people tend to feel proud of their government's military power, economic power etc)

When it comes to culture, I prefer to identify myself as a human, just like everybody else, so I do not feel proud because of "Brazilian culture" (my nationality), I rather feel proud of human culture (which is everything), I view myself as a being from the world, not a being from my country.

If we're going to localize human inventions like that, I can choose an arbitrary location that I do not make part of, therefore I am not associated with that, killing my "patriotic" feelings. For example, Brazilian culture is more related to things from Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, I was not born there, so they can be viewed as "foreign" to me (a perspective that happens in real life a lot, there are discriminations based on which part of Brazil you were born within Brazil). At the same time, I could feel proud of Mexican food because it's part of the same continent.

And I think patriotism can add fuel to xenophobia, and I despise that, precisely because you think your culture is the best, some people end up being hostile to "foreign" cultures. (I'm not saying that patriots are xenophobes, I'm just saying that it can add fuel to this)

Another reason is that every culture is a mix of foreign culture with domestic culture either way, so you'll have trouble finding some human costume born within your country borders without any influence from anything outside, the American continent is heavily influenced by European countries, which are heavily influenced by even more ancient cultures from other parts of the world (Christianity for example). So we just "import" them, make some adaptations and say "this is OUR culture".

I was very patriotic once, but after I became a libertarian, I started seeing national borders as only imaginary lines created by the governments in order to make people' lives more difficult.

Except in the World Cup, I am the most patriotic person in the world when I watch my national team playing soccer.

I was never patriotic before. I was an extremely angry and hate filled liberal. I was an SJW. I was going down the communism/socialism rabbithole before I woke up and became that which I despised my entire life. A *gasp!* free market advocate! Nooooooo!

Before, as a rage and hate filled liberal, I had zero pride in the US.

I believed the US was an evil country built on slavery and racism and it would take massive action through votes to right the wrongs of the past.

But today i would say I am a patriot.

After waking up from my liberal brainwashing, for the first time in my life I was able to see how great the US is and could be, or could have been, given less government intervention. If the constitution was more strict on government powers.

Ultimately, it's the philosophy that brings me much joy and pride. I love the ideas and the thinkers who helped shape the philosophical foundation of the constitution.

I think they fucked it up and let government have too much power, even though they fully knew better. But I dont know, maybe it was needed due to the British trying to impose their will on us. I know we made concessions to our freedom in order to be victorious against the British.

Soooooo yea. I think the US is still the greatest country on earth. Obviously most no longer agree. But freedom is seen as evil now. Most people are authoritarians. And in an authoritarian world, nothing is more evil than freedom.

Haha well it was only 3 years ago max that I changed. I was like 32 lol. I'm 35 now. I think maybe I'm late to the wake up party.

But, I learned recently that many of the greatest "right wing" thinkers started off on the left of their time. Like..
      Milton Friedman for example.

I'm just following in the footsteps of great people =D

I was a liberal up until 2015, but never an SJW. Hell, by its TRUE meaning, I still am a "liberal." Liberals are just no longer "liberal," anymore. They're fascists. Nowadays, I consider myself a Centrist and an Independent. Both sides suck, although the left sucks much worse now.

Also ignore that Flowers chick. She sounds like an idiot.

@MCheetah I agree with you. They aren't liberals anymore.

I intend to learn about fascism, precisely for what you have said. It feels to me like liberals are just fascists now.

I learned recently that many left wing thinkers in university as well as in politics, praised fascism in its early stages. Yet this country has conveniently forgotten all about that.

We denounce fascism now, and dont even know why.

That's why we're heading back towards it.

Fascism was in response to the failure of communism. They recognized that communism doesn't work. But, they did not believe in capitalism or free markets. They believed that the market must be free to some extent, in order to bring prosperity, but the state must step in to right certain wrongs and correct market failures.

That's exactly the system we live in today. I mean, I have not read the fascist literature. I never thought I would have to. But now I do, because the things I'm learning demands that I do so. Most would probably say we are not a fascist country. I need to read the literature so I can know truly for myself.

I used to be but what I realized is that I love freedom and people. I was that really really overkill person who would stand tall for the pledge of allegiance and practically cry while ( yes it's embarrassing to admit it) during the national anthem but all the while I was thinking of those both military, civilian, slave and the native people who were ruthlessly killed (which is why I'm so protective of freedom because nothing like that should ever happen again and pray that I'll be dead in in the ground before I sit idly by and watch something like that happen, but anyway thing of everyone who has sacrificed so much so that I can live my life how I want to and that's why I realized it's actually hypocritical to pledge allegiance to a flag, a country or anyone and anything. I am a free woman and while I'm grateful for that I should and could never swear to anything except God , sorry about that, or to the protection of my freedom and that of my fellow people. I don't care about politicians, as far as I'm concerned that VAST majority of them are sleaze balls and I don't like them, I don't give a damn about the law other than the ones that keep people safe that being said I care about pretty much everyone and anyone, I'm the kind of person who cries sometimes when I watch Pixar shorts, not to be dramatic but I would gladly die to protect others. So while loyalty to country is not important in the least you should adhere to your moral compass like glue and fight tooth and nail to protect those you can.

No. It has nothing to do with what my county has and has not done and more about the notion of superiority or something akin to it.
We are people. We are all people. We need to help each other and be kind. That is what all of every society is based on. That is the root of all of us.

We need to learn from our mistakes, find kindness in one another, and stop letting certain people's lives be worth more... stop letting some people's words be worth more. Once we do that I believe in a thousand years or so we will have no use for nations or flags.
But a country is made people and all different people are in different stages of their life, of their journey of kindness. So I won't be proud of a country, of a mass. I will be proud of people. Specific people who yearn for love and kindness and equality. I am proud of those people no matter where they are from.

Patriotism is about forming base opinions en mass. We don't need that.

Let’s just say that I encourage every country to be nationalistic.

Nationalism does not equal racism. There’s nothing wrong with wanting your country’s culture/traditions to thrive.

Some* kinds of nationalism are inherently racist.

Either way, racism aside, nationalism isn't sustainable, even by it's own definition, one can clearly see the consequences.

I'm patriotic in the sense Captain America is patriotic. I stand by the US's values and core beliefs, even in times when the US doesn't even stand by those core values and beliefs... Like right now, with the corpse of Biden in office being controlled by Chinese Communist puppeteers, and Critical Race Theory Marxism about to infect schools across the country.

So yeah, I'm the type to say "screw the Sokovia Accords" and become a supposed "traitor" to my country, just like George Washington and the Founding Fathers instructed in the Constitution. This is the best and only way I can answer this question, as a simple "yes" or "no" isn't sufficient.

Absolutely. Being from a country that turned it's extremely bad economical and otherwise poor quality of life upside down I have respect for what the people who built this nation did. Seeing the incompetence in the leftist government trying to revert our progress by sending trillions of Euros to other countries it just makes me feel angry at their incompetence.

I don't really have a political ideology. I just love my country and hate those that consider themselves representatives of it but proceed to degenerate it regardless. That being the leftist green government we currently have.

I'm traditional, conservative and attached to my country's culture and history.

    Why!

Becsuse i believe that when a person feels tied to a group they don't feel left out and abandoned and if this person abandoned his/her culture that's say immigrated to another country and took it's ciztenship they would still feel left out because things on paper are different from what people will veiw you.

Adding to that, if you look at diversified countries like the US for example you would find that most people feel left out even though democracy exists there.

Why does the US have more drug addicts than most countries because addiction starts from abandonment and self hate.

Those losing your own identity hate themselves the most.

American borns don't realize how good America has it compared to other countries.
meeting so many people who have fled socialism/communism to come here have always said America is the last sustaining place of liberty on earth...

it breaks my heart knowing where we are heading, liberals knowing nothing of socialism and are pushing it. they will learn the hard way I guess while dragging everybody else down with them I guess...

we will see how it turns out.
every country that tired it failed.

    we will see...

I mean yes? I love our history from a history student perspective because it dates back centuries and our role in the world has been a lot (good and bad) and I’m proud of the good we’ve done. I love the diversity and the mix of cultures because there’s no expectation to just have the typical British culture and people have all kinds of cultures. I’m patriotic in that sense but I know when we’re being shitty and that’s sadly a lot 😂

I feel patriotism for both the U. S. where I was born and Ireland where my family originated. My patriotism for the U. S. is biased. A person who is born into Catholicism or Islam and then adopts that religion has a similar bias towards their faith. However, beyond that, my sense of national pride stems from the belief that the U. S. has a better system of government than any yet devised. This is exemplified in its founding principles of separation of church and state, freedom of speech, equality for all, and others. These ideals are not yet fully realized. However, it is because I have hope for the future that I can maintain my belief in our government. I feel patriotism for Ireland because I have family there, I identify with their underdog status in the shadow of the U. K., and I enjoy visiting the island. I have often said that the IRA are my favorite terrorists!

No the country I'm in is absolutely horrible. POC, the LGBTQ and pretty much anyone who is not a wealthy white male is treated like garbage and what makes it worse is that a large percentage of the population approves of how things are and actively calls for others to have less rights and harsher experiences.

I hate cults, and things like patriotism fall under that stupid mentality.

Nothing wrong with loving ones country, but I think there's a difference between loving your country and being patriotic, especially patriotism in its current form today. It's just blind and silly and actually dangerous.

    Not at all.
To me a country is just a human made up object with certain attributes.
Such as a population, land area, a political Ideology, ressossources, a government, a flag, a military etc.
I never understood how you can be patriotic about that but I guess everyone is different.
I like where I live now and I know that I am really privileged but I am not really patriotic about my country.

I'd say from my travelling experience the culture where I live now just feels very familiar and it takes quite some time to get used to other cultures.
The history part I don't know I never found history that interesting and I don't know a lot about that subject.

Not really, Canada and the west in general has lost faith philosophy and even sanity in recent years. We're letting CRT and other communist subversions along with the greed of oligarchs tear our nations to shreds each pull the middle class down into the hell of a two class caste system.

Soon it's going to be nothing but haves and have nots with nobody in the middle.

I believe so, because I know and understand the truth about my government's past and present doings, and wish it weren't all true. Because of this, when I strive to make it better, I get branded a "liberal commie" by those who blindly follow stupid leaders. Funny how those claiming to be patriots are exactly the opposite.

I am very Patriotic. Raised by a father who spent 27 years in Navy and US Air Force. I served 34 years in US Navy and 27 of them in Navy Special Warfare. Very proud of my families Service to our Country. I shit Red, White and Blue. Would fight for the US today if needed. I’m considered a Toxic Male and think it’s a stupid Moniker hung on someone who stands for what’s right. America is going through some times right now I believe you young people will not enjoy in the near future if it keeps up.

Patriotic no I don't even claim or like the country I was born in (Germany)

I care more about my African and Middle Eastern culture because it just makes sense for me.
I've lived in the US for a long time now and still don't care about the American holidays or history, another part of it has to do with my religion.

Yes, I love my home country. I lived abroad for some years now and I still feel very attached to it. I don't feel like I need to move back, but I will keep traditions, the language up to date, still follow national news and I will never forget or neglect where I come from. I feel very lucky to have been born and raised there and that it is where I have my citizenship.

Yes I am. :) America may be all fucked up with all the snowflakes in the media and retards in the government. But we are still a free country, regardless who thinks what. Just the ideology of a land where the government fears is people is enough to keep me here.

I am patriotic because my country is my home. It has been my family's home for centuries. My ancestors fought for and many died for this country. Two signed the document that made it an independent nation.

Beeing patriotic is completly meaningless. Countries and nations even civilizations dissapear every few generations. Only thing that's left is people in the end and evolution of our race and DNA. Nature or universe doeasnt give a rats ass about your country. It will be here once it dissapears and trust me it will. It happened before and it will happen again.

When you are OF a specific country it means that you are a part of something bigger than yourself. You have a country that has your back but it is a two way street.
I think that if I have to explain this, you will never understand it.

I lived in many countries around the world what you describe is the primitive human instinct that is still in us we want to belong somewhere in some group of people that we were born into. In reality your country doesn't give a crap about you. Most people in your country won't shed a tear if you died now. Most of your siblings would betray you for moneyof your parents. Most polititians will walk over you if don't vote for them. If you believe your country will protect you, you live in a little illusion box. You only can count on yourself and only yourself. With this mindset I became a very wealthy man.
      Wish you all the best.

It's more like I want to be a nationalist but there's not that much to be proud of right now.

I will say that our country has the most potential... if only we choose to harness it again.

Dominate the world yet almost everyone here is a complete degenerate. It is like if you had all of the wealth in the world but you were the only person in the world. When you have everything but lack decent principles everything else falls short. Death is better than living in a world dominated by degenerates.
