My whole childhood, I watched pro hockey. That good, “old time hockey” of the 80s and 90s, three fights a game, physical play, etc. That’s what really drew me, more so than the finesse. It was cool to watch Wayne Gretzky, but what Marty McSorley would do to the guys who tried to hit Gretzky…. THAT’S what I was really into.
I never was able to play due to expense and my family being unable to commit to the hectic schedule of early morning practices before school. I had lots of fun playing other sports, but I never got the real hockey experience until now, as an adult.
So I just started learning to play last spring (after a false start in 2020 halted by the pandemic🙄😒), and I’ve finally joined a competitive men’s league. I’m still looking for my first goal, which will be a thrill, for sure. But honestly, as a hockey fight enthusiast for three and a half decades, I really wanted to experience getting in a scrap. Like Pink Floyd said, “all you touch and all you see is all your life will ever be”, so I chase dreams and chase life experiences, those that intrigue and excite me, anyway. And I’d implore all of you to do the same, whatever that may be. Life is for living!
There’s a PUNK-ASS goalie in our league, always mouthing off, always getting “friendly” with his stick if you’re in his reach. He always starts with the biggest guy on the other team (I’m the smallest one he’s done it to this season, and I’m 6’2 lmao). I play ornery, for sure, but this kid starts trouble.
At the final buzzer we got tangled up, he snapped up and yells “You wanna go?”, then before I could even think of a cool line to say back, lmao, WHACK, kid punches me right in the face with his big glove. But all the shots after that came from me. I’m glad he wasn’t injured (I couldn’t shake off my glove to fight bare-fisted), but I put him on his ass in pretty spectacular fashion. I come from a hockey family where all male members reached high level play. So I ended up playing Junior Hockey, growing up, as a goaltender. Got into a few fights with players and sometimes the other goalie. Definitely was chasing that dream of pro hockey but it's extremely difficult to get there. Eventually gave up on the idea after doing a bit of university level.
80's and 90's hockey was absolutely glorious, I agree. Had the likes of Yzerman, Cujo, Moog, Selanne, Paul Kariya, Hasek, Coffey, Cam Neely, et cetera. Each game had tons of action. My father and I watched it religiously but neither of us are as interested in it anymore. It's just not the same.
I've reached Semi-Pro status in Mixed Martial Arts so I've been chasing that dream as well. Had a lot of injuries so I'm not sure I can reach beyond that, haha.

I played hockey/street hockey for 3 years and no one every fought me. Everyone knew I was a state champion in wrestling so they were scared... Two of the three years my team took the gold. The one year we lost and got the silver was due to a bullshit call by the ref… The way he was calling shit that game I think he took a pay off from one of the parents on the other team. At the end I was like it was fixed and the boys were pretty mad about it, but the other team talked shit, then my team was like you want to go, and a full scale brawl was about to break out and I skated over and then they’re line nah I got to go home… Fucking lame… An entire team tucked tail and ran away.
I ran a major marathon. There were wall to wall people the whole 26 miles and there were thousands cheering at the finish line. I will never forget it.

Was that something you always had wanted to do or did the inspiration strike you later on in your adult life?
I was training for it for about two years. Marathons were really getting popular and I was good at endurance sports. I had to qualify for this marathon by running another one under 3 hours. I ran a local race the year before. It was a small race with hardly any spectators. I almost quit at the 20 mile mark but I pushed myself to the end.
