I'm not sure who that's going to stop tbh. If you truly feel that your life is at a dead end, the law is probably one of the last things you think about.

If anything, being punished for the failed attempt will likely make the criminal want to do it even more.

It wouldn’t matter if the person succeeded. On the flip why would you punish a survivor of something that takes an incredibly painful position to be in to attempt? So, absolutely not.

I'm assuming you think this is the answer to stop people from committing suicide? It isn't. They won't be thinking about how much trouble they'd get into if their attempt failed, when someone is that broken, they aren't going to be thinking rational thoughts. Besides, if they are successful, what would it matter? These people need help and support, not punishment.

I don't think it matters. If you attempt suicide you've given up on the law and everything else. But my gut feeling is that suicides are sick and you don't arrest people for being sick.
