Answer. It's a bed warmer. In old days, you would fill it with hot coals from the fireplace and then insert it under the covers at the foot of the bed, to help keep you warm.

you used it for "Beating" a rug hanging over a line... pre-vacuum cleaner...
or...
it was a bed warmer, you put Hot coals in it, closed the cover, and ran it up and down under the covers to warm up the blankets and bedding on Cold nights

Bed warmer. Mostly they're used as ornaments hanging on walls of old people's houses. I reckon most people have an elderly relative who has one hanging up somewhere

I remember seeing one of those things & I think you heat it up in the fire & after you do you brush your blankets with it & it warms your bed up or something like that.

I think its a bed warmer, you fill it with water and put in into the oven or chimney, than the hot pan goes into the bed to warm it up. So it gets warm and cozy.

My father grew up without indoor plumbing, heat, air conditioning, etc. He said they would heat up bricks next to the hearth and put them under their blankets to keep warm in the winter.
