Yes. Their name is a noun (proper noun). All names are nouns. Pronouns are the words you use as stand-ins when you don't want to repeat the noun again. You know how this works in practice I presume (Mary is 23, they play tennis, and they paint. Vs. Mary is 23, Mary plays tennis, and Mary paints.)
Also, they/them are 3rd person pronouns, like he/him and she/her. In English, 3rd person pronouns are the only pronouns that are gendered. So no matter their gender identity, you will still use 2nd person pronouns (eg: You look nice today, Mary. Your hat is cute.) and 1st person pronouns (eg: when portraying a character, "I am Mary, and my pronouns are they/them.") just like normal.
This is all basic English, but English is my 1st language and was my favorite subject in school, so I did retain more information than others I guess. If you have trouble as well you can always ask them. If they are open about their pronouns they would probably appreciate you asking and learning rather than just staying quiet and confused.
I can call somebody whatever I want because I am an American and I enjoy freedom of speech.
That's not how freedom of speech works, unless they are the government, the first amendment doesn't apply as something they have to follow. While I agree with the sentiment that you're allowed to say whatever you want in most cases (there are some reasonable exceptions like 'fire" or inciting a riot) I really do wish people. would stop misappropriating the first amendment... If people don't properly understand their rights and what they actually are, then they can't defend them properly... And that's important, because they are important.
@LindsayR07 What specifically did I say about the First Amendment that troubles you?
You both have a point. He CAN say what he wants, because that’s not covered by the “fighting words” doctrine. Fighting words aren't protected.
Nothing, it's just that people ought not cite the First Amendment to make the implication that because of the First Amendment they shouldn't face social repercussions. They only cannot face LEGAL repercussions.
My issue is simply that people cannot properly defend that which they do not properly understand... And we must defend our rights.
@LindsayR07 I never suggested that the First Amendment would protect me from social repercussions. It only protects me from government regulation of my speech. I actually do understand the First Amendment fairly well.
I'm sure you do, but there are many who do not... Never underestimate the stupidity of people! I am sure that we can agree on that one pretty easily lol
@LindsayR07 Absolutely. The stupidity of people keeps me in business!
That makes 2 of us!
@LindsayR07 Hey, I think trannies are delusional.
What “consequences” should I suffer, mein Fürher?
If their pronouns are they/them, they still go by their given name. It doesn't matter what the pronouns are, people still go by their name/nickname.
My one coworker, Val, goes be ze/zem pronouns because ze is non-binary. I try to make sure I use ze's preferred pronouns, but sometimes I slip up & say she/her & correct myself. I try to be respectful of ze's feelings on the subject.
But I hate when I don't know people's preferred pronouns & when I don't use them they get mad. Like, I'm sorry, I wasn't informed that you prefer certain pronouns & I will make note of it & try not to slip up in the future.
Thats a pretty good question , i eprsonally woild unless they have another name they want to go by if not if u nicole u nicole.

I ignore that mostly and thankfully never met someone in real life yet
The English language doesn’t allow single humans to use they them pronounce because it makes no sense, they them aren’t single pronouns, We use they them occasionally when we don’t know if the person is male or females, like if someone cuts you off in traffic so say they are an asshole you use they because you don’t know if there male or female you haven’t seen there face, but once you see the face of the person they cut you off is a male or female the proper pronouns are she/her or he/him the human language stops making sense when you call a single person they/them so English has banned they/them form being used as single pronouns in 99% of situations
You call them by whatever name they want to go by... I mean we had no problem calling Sean Combs "Puffy", then Puff Daddy, then Puff Diddy, then P Diddy, then just Diddy... I mean, we wrapped our collective heads around that so why should we care about calling someone what they want to be called? Just ask.
Yes! And...
You can also call them she/her if this is a female and he/him if this person is a male.
Just more absolute idiocy from woke leftist liberals. OMG are they someone special? NO! They get to be either Male or Female. You don't have other choices. You either have a penis or a vagina.
Leftists... always trying to make life worse. Just forget the pronoun stupidity and call them by their normal pronouns - she or he.
Yeah, of course.
Proper names don't go away with pronoun use. Just like how if you know someone who uses she/her or he/him pronouns, you still can use their proper name.
I use they/them and she/her pronouns and you can just call me Growly.
If someone is using "alternative" pronouns, my solution is to cut that person out of my life. Problem solved. I don't support other people's delusions, and I have no reason to waste my own time and energy dealing with them. That's the job of mental health professionals.
Of course- that's what names are for. As a rule, though, anyone who brings up what their chosen pronouns are during an introductory conversation is a raving nut (a gentle correction upon referring to a transsexual is something quite different); use caution when dealing with them.
Who knows. It all seems very arbitrary and random. If you care enough about the person you can ask them. Otherwise it’s probably best to just avoid them. Especially in a place that can civilly punish you for not keeping up with their every changing demands.
Yes using the person's name is probably easier.
I really dislike the pronoun game because it creates a language imposition on others.
I have a family member who's they them, and it makes conversation mildly irritating despite my desire to be supportive because it disrupts the flow of my speech.
Dang some of these takes are straight savage, But nah I won't encourage this stupidity. (They/them) is a literary term for more then one person, And if "one" identifys as "they"... "They" (as in multiple people) are confused, and still one person be it he or a she. So unless you are two people conjoined and standing in front of me you won't be calld (they/them) by me. As for (he/him) and (she/her) this should be irrelevant.
Not necessarily. It also works if you don't know the gender for example: "we have a new kid joining class today. I hope they don't suck."
"they" has been used as a singular in literature and culture since 1375. It's not a new concept and I'd even wager you have used "they" as a singular on my a regular basis without thinking about it
Yes I have but not because someone else told me to. The word They is used in writing as a third-person pronoun to not make assumptions to a gender roll (he or she) but we are not in a book and no one is narrating so third-person perspectives are irrelevant. English literature and genders are two completely different things. I'm no English major, I just personally feel this concept can become psychology damaging to some people. I'm not trying to be an asshat nor am I judging or trying to offend anyone. We are all entitled to our own opinion and if you do not agree that's ok and If someone wants to identify as they that's fine with me more power to them. I just don't agree.
Actually, though the political hornets nest wouldn't tell you so, they've been studying trans and NB people for DECADES, and the studies show that if you affirm their gender identity it is actually BENEFICIAL to their mental health, not detrimental like politicians would like you to believe.
Like I said already we are all entitled to our own opinion.
If they go by "they/them," then I will refer to them as "f*ck/off."
Yeah, I'm not indulging in your narcissistic, mentally ill BS just because your parents failed you. I live in reality.
If they're obviously a woman, I call them "she/her". If they're obviously a man, I call them "he/him". That's all there is to it. I'm tired of this pronoun crap.
I know a tranny, I haven’t seen him for long time before he turned trans, but if I met him, no way I’m calling him his trans name
I call BS, you want more school shooters? Jesus Christ get these kids some help!
People wanna talk about “basic biology” and still fuck they girl in the ass, wtf?
How do trans people have ANYTHING to do with school shooter? Please make this connection for me.
@LindsayR07 look, someone I grew up with turned trans, maybe your sicko parents support you and your sister becoming trans, but guess what? That’s your sicko family and other people don’t think that’s healthy!
You still haven't connected transfolks to school shootings...
@LindsayR07 yeah flip a coin do I become trans today or murder my mom? hope he become trans … my god!
Still not making a logical connection...
@LindsayR07 ok fine you made me say it, all gay people are psychologically abused, some people even think animals are gay, well guess what? Some people even fuck animals. Biologically for a man OR woman to be penetrated in their anus is a violent act, lesbians are silly, gay guys are gross, and trans are? not a gender at all they are transvestites, and all are psychologically abused and I bet you the majority were sexually abused as well, just plain facts, looks like a disease you catch tbh cuz how else someone have 0 gay people in their family other people have hella
We can agree to disagree on all of that but for sake of argument, how does that even connect to school shootings?
@LindsayR07 psychological abuse again “this is society bullshit” fucking stupid ass terrorists god damn we gotta help our communities!
I'll give you one more try before it's official you have no argument and you're just coming from a place of hate.
@LindsayR07 sorry for being so loud 😳 sometimes I forget I’m not the cops 🚨
Nope, you have no argument
@LindsayR07 oh yeah here’s my thesis 100% of male homosexuals have sexual childhood trauma such as being molested or exposed to alternative sexuality at a young age. Now, how am I wrong?
I know a LOT of LGBT people who experienced 0 childhood trauma. But even IF your faulty premise were true, how does that connect to school shootings?
@LindsayR07 bullshit! How the hell they become gay then? They born that way? Ask them yourself, how they became gay? I live in Seattle I seen HELLA gay people, I only talk to one someone I work with but a few families I know at my church had gay sons. Gay people were all molested, just facts. Like not all insects are bees? But all gay people were molested.
On the connection: we’re human beings not damn fish that’s how it’s connected, and human beings sometimes shoot up schools, and those very tiny few that do, probably had a fucked up life
I feel sorry for you.
@LindsayR07 fair enough, I got what I deserved
If someone has that pronoun shit I cancel them. I went to a book store to purchase some novels while flying & the employee had all these stupid pins supporting various deviants with name tag saying various pronouns. I saw that and left. Spent my money elsewhere.
i guess you have to abide by your local law. i really hope for you that in your region they don't have a law that forces you to do that bullshit. where i live, there's no such law. so i won't do that. it's either him or her depending on what i see, not depending on what they feel like that day.
Just use him / her as appropriate. There is no need to validate their mental Illness.
I go by well actually I don't care what pronouns people call me but yes you can still call them by the name they go by unless they change that and usually after doing so people need a little bit of time to adjust
I'm not doing any if that if your male I'm calling you sir, until you tell me to call you a ma'am or sir lol I don't give a fuck I do it all the time I address people and I just play the oh sorry and then only call them by their name.
For people using they/them I just call them by their name …. those pronouns don’t make sense for a person (singular)
I find it hard to take any question relating to such pronouns seriously. Call them by their names or just shout "hey you over there", who gives a shit?
I will address a person either by name, Mr./Ms./Dr. And surname, or address them properly using the second person pronoun you.
Yes. Like if they're name is "Jane" then just call 'em "Jane". But they don't look li-
Ah, ah, ah. It's. Jane. :)
Especially if it used to be Jayne! ... Oh now that song from Firefly is stuck in my head
You can call that person whatever you like. That person was given a name to be used by others. As for pronouns, there are only three sets. I for guys, one for girls and one for a group of male and/or female.
You can also call them by their natural (i. e. real) pronouns... No law against it, and it's being honest.
Of course.
If they go by they/them, it just means they don't want to be identified by a gender (she/her or he/him)
If someone insists on using those pronouns I just avoid them completely, because they've obviously got psychological problems, and I can't deal with weirdos.
I won't talk to them at all. They're invisible to me.
That’s what I call them. They have a name like everyone else.
They is plural. He/she is singular.
It's not a real issue. These people only exist in feminist destroyed youtube videos. They don't exist in real life.
I would. prefer to call them by the name they go by.. But from my understanding yes..
I'd think they're dumb and just call them by what they clearly are
You can call him/her "a bit on the insane side"
Yeah.. just because someone has pronouns, doesn’t mean their name is suddenly cancelled out.
If I know someone's name, that's pretty much always how I address that individual.
Obviously! since when did pronouns take over names?
I believe so. However, the stupidity of the woke underclass knows no bounds. They might want to cancel names and force some other woke bollocks on us.
Simples...
Maybe you have to add an S as proper names are singular
If they tell you what they want to be called, isn’t that what you’re supposed to call them?
i just call everybody a rotten son of a bitch and then they have nothing to complain about. my friends don't care and if you're not my friend then i don't care.
Just avoid all of that and use their names. Don’t have time to think about which pronouns to use for different people.
probably not.. they might be offended..
poor snowflakes
Of couse that's their name. Unless they tell you not to.
I don't worry about such goofy shit!! I don't live in Bizarro world.
Just call them what they are, I'm not playing games with delusional people
I will not give a fuck. I will call them by their name.
I call him or her by their name. I don't participate in other people's delusions.
Yeah, It just means they don't want to be identified as she/her or he/him. You can still say their name though.
I don't understand your confusion. If your pronouns are she/her, can I still call you by the name you go by?
If anyone uses they/them outside of a group context do the workdca favor and change thier pronouns to was/were
"it" "that" "whoever" "whatever"
won't dignify them by honoring their imaginary special status.
People can do what they want, but you are under no obligation to go along with their delusions.
Sure but I think that’s lunacy. Especially when every they/them person I met was obviously one gender or the other.
“Them” and “they” are plural. I won’t use those words for one person.
A woman is a her and a man is a him. Nothing else. All this is just made up bullshit.
Pronouns other than he and she are awkward and stupid.
I don't really care. I can't be compelled to call any stranger I meet on the street anything, and they can't do anything to make me.
Yes, you just don't use a gendered pronoun when you are using a pronoun to describe them.
Call them bother first name only
No worries
I refuse to play pronoun games.
Whatever they’re comfortable with ig
