A neighbor knocks on your door. "Can I borrow a screwdriver?" they ask.
How do you respond?

I loan tools to my neighbors all the time. I even loaned a screwdriver recently. I borrow tools from them also. I bet I've loaned tools 50+ times in the last few years.
I have the opposite problem at the moment. I have a floor jack and four big C-clamps that I borrowed last winter. I've tried to give them back to the guy a few times now and he keeps putting it off. I want the floor jack out of my garage before the first snows hit. I need to clean that side of the garage so I can get car inside.
I would ask them what kind of screwdriver they need. If they don't know what they need I will grab my tools box and they can look for themselves to see what they think would do the job.
Is "can I borrow a screwdriver" the American equivalent to "can I come in for coffee"?
If a member of the opposite sex is asking, it probably is.
Well I've had a neighbor of the opposite sex ask to borrow a corkscrew and that wasn't an invite. Since she had her boyfriend there and she had just moved in, so she didn't have one.
I'll give him one if I have some Vodka and Orange Juice at hand.
Oh my gosh! I sounds like you have dubious intentions! LOL...
@ArrowheadSW Who, me? ha ha

"Sorry, but I don't even loan tools to my brother. I've loaned too many tools wth the promise that they would be returned immediately and I never saw them again."
I have some inexpensive Harbor Freight tools that I don't mind loaning out. If I don't get them returned, they're cheap to replace, and teaches me valuable information about my neighbor at a very low cost.
Of course, they're not going to get any of the nicer tools that I make my living with.
I have the good stuff for me, and spare tools on the side, that's one. Second! I will tell them that i am gonna need it, other wise i have a lot of tools and i know where you live 😉. Aaaaand! If they borrow things from me all the time, i will show them some tool sales so they can get.
"sure..."
and then I hand them the set of screw drivers "to borrow"
when some people would borrow ONE thing, it could take days or weeks to see them back, so I just hand them a full set of tools with a fancy container as well... it is a best reminder that it is not theirs and I probably want it back too... lol
and it also has most types of screwdrivers they could need and use
"theyre in my workshop, what you need them for, need any help?"
really, if someone doesn't own a screwdriver (or even a leatherman type tool) of their own, im not mad on lending them a £100 tool without knowing what theyre up to. if its some nonsense, I will probably grab them a few of my old paint-stirrer screwdrivers and tell them to keep hold of them.
hold on I was just about to mix a few, you can have one with me...
A screwdriver is a popular alcoholic highball drink made with orange juice and vodka. In the UK, it is referred to as a "vodka and orange".
Very helpful, but they really need the tool.
Your area has neighbors who knock on eachother's doors and talk to eachother?
We even say "Hi" and wave to each other when we see them.
:O like in the movies?
i will loan hand tools to people but will not loan them power tools especially my chain saw. I always say I will go over and cut up the treee for them,
You can give it to them but you won’t get it back for a few months probably
Possibly. Just the other day, my new neighbor asked to borrow a screwdriver... and he returned it a few hours later. Yes, I was surprised. That's what prompted this question/poll.
No, now get your fat geriatric ass off my property.
Give him a box of screwdriver heads and the electric screwdriver.
As my husband would say: "If you promise to return it. You will, right?"
My neighbors all hate me, so this would never happen
"A screwdriver? Like this one? Ok, cool. Finish there 'cause I have something else that needs screwing [by you] too"
"Of course"
As I have one of those multifunctional screwdrivers.
Not opening door. Wild things people do these days.
I don’t answer my door. Ever.
I’m more of a “stare through the peephole with a very sharp knife in my hand” kinda guy.
If they know the difference between crosshead, Phillips, and Pozidrive I'd lend,,,
I have a cheap set of hand tools that I let neighbors borrow. I don't loan out power tools
If it were a woman neighbor, I would think she was suggesting "something else"... LOL
