Help Why My Tv Shows A Black Screen When I Turn It On? Is My Tv Broken?

My boyfriend gave me this tv so it’s special to me , we were talking about movies he borrowed me today & I had paused a movie for an hour , while leaving the tv and dvd player on. I want press play to see movie and the sound plays but the screen is black. I unplugged the tv and it still won’t turn on. 😞

Do you have a power light indicatng the TV is getting power? Can you access menu functions? Do you have the input selector set to a signal that is actually going to the TV?

Yes the power light is green. It turns on but I cannot see the screen it’s black

Have you checked to make sure the TV is plugged into a power source?

Could be broken, could be the (power) cable broken or not comnected properly.

Maybe you just need to flip an extra switch on the back of the tv to turn it on.

Just ask your boyfriend.

Maybe the tv was broken before, maybe it got damaged during transport, maybe its the small faults above, maybe its something different...

Sounds like screen burn in. Usually depending on the dvd manufacturer - there will be a sort of screen saver function built in to prevent screen burn.

Could be old. I have this problem too.
Unplug it.
Plug it back in.
Turn it on.
Didn’t work? Repeat.


Works under 20 tries. I’m currently saving for a new tv.

The screen element likely went out. It can be fixed, but with the low cost of televisions it is probably not worth the cost.

Depends on the exact television, what exactly is wrong, and the market price where you live. Where I live the simple diagnostic is about half the cost of a new TV if it's 27" or under. You might want to call a few repair shops and explain the issue and see what they say.
