How does "let me ask you something" sound to you?

I don't think offensive is the right word. But when someone phrases it like that my guard definitely goes up. That specific phrase usually leads to someone asking something they probably shouldn't. If you're going to ask a question either straight up ask it or change the phrase to "can I ask you something?", "I have a question", "could you help me out with something I've been thinking about".

not offensive but intrusive. like either you ask something straight up or you ask whether you can ask something or not and let them decide. "let me ask you somethign" sounds like a demand that the other person can't say no to.
