What exactly makes someone an adult?

Moving out and getting your own place. Learning how to drive and getting a car of your own. Being able to cook for yourself etc or are all those things just basics of living rather than being an adult?

I know for a fact it is all of them. Being totally self-sufficient without getting money from anywhere except from your job.

Taking responsibility to be on time; when you tell someone you will call or text them, remember your word is your bind.

Being responsible is big on the list.

Taking responsibility for your actions, accepting that for every choice there is a consequence and by law you are an adult if you reach appropriate age by law to take responsibility and your parents no longer are for you

Adulthood is just an arbitrary age where you take legal/contractual responsibility for your own outcomes. What you do with that, is up to you because you are now responsible for your own affairs.

That's the problem with younger generations. They all think "adulting" is this major stepping stone in life and a series of difficult actions they need to take.
When really it's pretty basic stuff.

Get a decent job, pay your bills on time, don't spend what you don't have, and use Google or ask someone to help with stuff you don't know how to do. It's not hard

Adult is an age defined by society, in the USA it's 18, other places its 20 .

You have society confused with law. I think the Asker is looking for a deeper understanding of personal development. A good sign of being an adult is trusting your own wisdom and being disciplined to know and go with what you need over what you want. It's good habits that start as simple as making your bed every morning and saying no to yourself when there's an easier and clearly worse option. Someone in the US who is at least 18 can vote and consent to sex, but an adult is more capable of judgment and can determine whether the circumstances make it appropriate.

It's a variety of things that makes you an adult but one for sure thing that I can say makes someone an adult is when you start paying taxes lol
