What's your view on making changes to human genome?
So the argument is, why should this be immoral?
For the same reason eugenics always is. If you're referring specifically to the most recent mass attempt, well, bear in mind that it hadn't yet been confirmed that every human cell is reverse transcriptase capable when it started, so it wasn't yet known (just suspected) that there's no such thing as safe levels of exposure to a mutagen.
That was immoral mostly because it was so damned irresponsible to risk altering the DNA of pathogens.
Oh, it is. Nazism was about quite a bit more than just removing "inferior" humans from the gene pool. THAT, sadly, is still around.
There are many conditions that are caused by genetic faults. Things like ALS, and colorblindness and many others. It would be good to be able to repair the genes to prevent these conditions from presenting. The problem is that this would not stop at preventing disease. People will want to make sure their kids were physically attractive and display athletic ability and have a high IQ.. The government would figure out a way to subvert the technology for their own needs.
Personally I think its cool as shit that we might actually be able to do it… but watch the movie Gattaca if you haven’t seen it.
