It's true, but as @purplepoppy notes, it depends on several factors, including distance to the shore, wind patterns, temperatures, and so on. In some areas it's really bad, rusting metal and dry-rotting wood with alarming speed. In other places, the effect is much more mild, but still needs to be managed.

Your cars, lawn mowers, and many other things left outside will also be affected.

It depends on the chromium levels of your steel and whether you get a lot of sea spray. A good guide is to look how far inland salt tolerant wild plants are found.

Your local hardware store will advise if you need to bother protecting your steel.
