Can you smell the sea?

I don't live too far from the sea so perhaps I'm overly accustomed to it but I can't really smell it. Sure if the seas threw up a mountain of rotting seaweed or a dead seal I'll notice but to me the smell of the sea isn't that noticeable.

When people say they love the smell of the sea I don't get it and think they're just getting a whiff of candy floss and BBQs.

The "smell of the sea" is really the smell of the shoreline, mostly of rotting seaweed and other sea life. You can smell sea water when you are out on it, but it's not a very strong smell, and if you are around it all the time, you can't even smell it.

I can smell the sea. But it is hard to describe, it like smelling the salt. And if you think you smell the sea if the sea spits out rotting seals. Is will be the smell of death... Not the sea. 🤭

I have a thing for scents. Love the smell of the ground when it rains, i like the smell if rain, the smell of of wood in a sawmill...

No. I did between match and August. I’m back in Canada now so no ocean smells for me until the school year is out for summer breaks again.
The sea has a very interesting smell to it depending on location in the world. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to explain it well.

Since I'm landlocked smack in the middle of the 48 contiguous US states, I'm nowhere near a sea. There are just a couple of mighty muddy rivers here, and they can really smell bad on some hot Summer days.

@Mansearching I'm on the Kansas side of the Kansas City Metro. We have the Missouri and Kansas Rivers mainly, and further north the Platte River.

They usually flow pretty fast don't they?

@Mansearching Not really. They do when there's a lot of rain in Nebraska and northern Missouri, but most times it runs pretty evenly up north, then by the time it reaches River Market in downtown KCMO it's pretty still.

Fortunately I live far enough from both main rivers I never smell them. But downtown KCMO by River Market and the Power & Light District on a hot Summer day can get pretty ripe.

No, Power & Light District gets its name from the old Power & Light building that still sits there on the north side of the district. The district itself is home to the Sprint Center, some theaters, some sports venues, and quite a few bars and restaurants. It's one of Kansas City's "happening" places :-) It sits close to the river, but the old P&L building contained offices and had was not a power generating facility.

I think you are right. I live close to the Pacific, have dived in it, (never swam in it, too damned cold) sat on the beach. They are probably smelling the dead whale that washed up on shore, or the sea gull poop in the top of their head the gulls left there.

Maybe difficult to believe, but I'm not sure because I have no idea how to describe what I smell or feel when I know the wind comes from the sea. I live in a town 150 - 200 km away from te sea, and just know when the wind comes from the sea, because of something fresh and indescribable changing how the air feels and smells.

You can. When ever I get a chance to go to the gulf of Mexico I can smell the salt in the air.

Maybe you just can't smell it over your natural sea scent? Maybe you've just become desensitized to it over the years.

I can occasionally if there is a brisk breeze off the bay. Usually not though. I'm 1-2 Km inland.
