What is the meaning of "we are what we seek"?

Well, it’s open to interpretation but I see it this way: if you seek out specific opportunities and goals then it gives tremendous insight into what motivates you, defines your priorities, or what you value most in life.


If you seek out opportunities to preach your religion, you’re clearly a pious & devout person. If you seek out athletic challenges they you are most likely a fit person. If you invest a lot of time in learning things and expanding your knowledge you are probably an educated person. The pattern is obvious from there.


I know people who are very driven by something deep inside them. Once you get to know them that passion which burns in them defines a lot of their persona. Some prioritize money, others duty or service, yet others self-improvement. You understand what a person is trying to find and get out of life, you understand a big part of them.

When we seek something, we are attempting to find a kind of external &/or internal sense of meaning in the thing. And when we can embody this meaning how we want to, we feel a great sense of comfort & ease. Then we think, "Oh the relief." That comes with having purpose. Which makes us feel even more secure in ourselves & in the very environment around us. And we feel as though we're not only on the right train, but heading to the correct place, on the right track.

Now you might ask, "Why are we like this?" Well, this is because we have a very interesting gift of basing a good amount of our own identities on our values. And you see, our values are an expression of who we want to be just as much as they are an extension of our current selves. You can tell a lot about a man just by knowing his values. Just as a caterpillar could want to become a butterfly, a man seeks to become a better man. And well he couldn't do that if he were the caterpillar now could he? Nor could the caterpillar if it were somehow the size of a man! 🤣

It is meant as a way to showcase that if you seek a good relationship you are a good person. The problem is so very many shitty people seek good relationships. Their is a different one "birds of a feather flock together" this references the fact that shitty people end up with shitty people despite not wanting shitty people. The reason is good people don't want shitty people they want other good people. It is the basis of "you get what you deserve" and "you made your bed now lie in it" as well "you dug this hole yourself" among many other similar quotes

A more personalized understanding of how the energy you put out into the world is what you receive from it. Basically, if you’re a selfish person who focuses only on your wants and needs, of course you’re going to so often clash with other people of a similar nature and you keep finding them because you keep provoking them whether intentional or not. It also means that if you’re a kind person who treats others with respect you’ll often find others who give you that exact same treatment.

There is something called the similarity and familiarity attraction effect in psychology. We are attracted to people that are similar to ourselves. Similar views, interests, goals, communication style, love languages... basically everything. And we are also attracted subconsciously to people that are familiar, both physically and personality-wise.
