When sorting by price on a website what do you assume each option means?

I swear every website assumes something different with "price ⬆️" and "price ⬇️"

I assume arrow pointing down is highest price to lowest price

And up is lowest to highest.

There's definitely websites that think the opposite.

Why can they not all just have sort low to high?

I sometimes wonder if it might be a difference in brain hemispheres.

I'm old enough to have worked with a variety of UX and UI designers and I've noticed right-handed ones use a different language than left-handed ones.

I'm a right-handed one so if I think of descending, I think down with the down arrow, greater to lesser. But as backwards as it seems, the left-handed UI designers I've worked with think of descending as up with the up arrow, still greater to lesser.

Both make logical sense but our intuitions are reversed.

I think with left-handed designers, they think more logically. So they tend to prioritize smaller to larger. So maybe to them 🔼 means lowest price is on the bottom, highest on top.

I'm a right-hander so I just think lowest price is what we want first and foremost, and I want to read top-to-bottom, so I think of 🔽 as lowest price at the top and highest at the bottom.

There is also this discrepancy in computer graphics with the vertical axis.

Some think moving along the vertical axis in the positive direction means moving downwards. Those, I suspect, are right-handers, or at least more verbally-oriented people because we read from top to bottom.

Then others place the positive direction of the vertical/Y axis as moving upwards, and they're more mathematically-oriented perhaps because that's how we graph things mathematically.

So it might actually be a contrast between whether we're more verbally oriented or mathematically-oriented.

price ⬆️ - I would assume this says "prices ( going from) low to high " and they would show me the lower prices first

I never buy from my phone though... so I guess mobile apps just have icons and stuff, which makes it way more vague

I don't even use the option, I didn't even notice most sites had the option lol

The sites I use let you filter how you want to see the listing. It doesn't give signs. It just says asending or desending.
