Does your home have a fire extinguisher?

Experts recommend that every home have at least one fire extinguisher, in a place where it can be easily accessed... and regularly checked to ensure it is charged. When I was living alone, I had two extinguishers in my apartment. One was near the fireplace and the other was in the dining area next to the kitchen. They were each mounted to the wall. My SO thinks fire extinguishers are ugly, not aesthetic, and our extinguishers are hidden behind clothes in a closet. I lost the argument with her a long time ago about this, and decided there are more important things to fight about. Do you have fire extinguishers in your home? Do you check regularly that the extinguisher is charged? Is it easy to access if/when needed? Do you know how to use it? Fire extinguishers are rarely adequate for completely extinguishing a fire. So the best place to keep them isn’t necessarily where a fire could start, but where you might need it to reduce flames in order to escape; preferably both. Also, laundry rooms are still the high on the most likely place for a fire because too few people invest enough time and energy into maintaining the dryer exhaust.
The common acronym used in fire extinguisher training is PASS. Pull the pin. Aim the extinguisher at the base of the flames. Squeeze the trigger. Sweep from side to side slowly. If you’re very interested, your local fire department probably offers classes that include practical experience extinguishing flames.
Also, know the TYPES of fires and have appropriate extinguishers for each. There is no one universal extinguisher. So you’ll want at least two to three different types in your home or business, stored near where those types of fires are most likely to occur or spread to prevent safe egress.

We have FE in the aisle just off the kitchen (also close enough to deal with the fireplace in the next room but we can just turn off the gas on that sucker) , and the area just off the furnace room in the basement. You can make a space for a recessed cabinet behind a large piece of art attached to a piano hinge. Accessible and discreet. I have one on either side of the fire zone in my house and I am very design-conscious. HGTV should really have a show addressing safety and design.

Everyone should know where it is and how to use it. It should not be located too near the fire source. It should be easy to get to. As a woman, I would beg your SO to reconsider her stance. Safety trumps aesthetics, but aesthetics are easy to accomplish in this situation, compared to a lot of other things.

Unless you've got the right type and know how to use it they can be dangerous. The advice in the UK is only to use one to aid your escape.  We've a fire blanket in the kitchen instead.

hi, i have two fire extinguishers and a fire blanket and a fire ladder you throw out of the window... about two years ago one evening there was loud banging on my front door alerting me next door had a fire... within moments the whole upstairs was ablaze... luckily they had a really good fire wall between us... they lost everything in minutes... tho... its essential..

I voted that I have more than one. There is one upstairs and I have one down here in the dungeon/man cave.

If someone like my wife is going to cook... I suggest a big bag of salt. It will smother a grease fire fast.

I did put one in when it became a rental hopefully its still there , the other house ( Australia ) should have but does not , the place I rent here in Thailand , no , it still probably should , but I'm only cooking electric currently , still should have though.

Some of ours do some don't. Current house does not. It is made entirely out of clay, bricks, stone with a slate roof. Only flammable bits are the carpets and the hardwood floor but not needed as the closest source of flame is either the kitchen or the fireplaces and nothing happening their as kitchen is tiled and fireplaces have a stone hearth

It depends on what is which fire extinguisher i only seen in cafe shopping centre and some buses different country then uk. some fire can used fire blanket as well. don't have one at home. I'm from UK

Homeowners insurance requires me to keep a fire extinguisher, and to maintain it's charge. Its mounted to the wall in the back entry by the kitchen.
