Is it astonishing some robbers and burglars actually have some morals left?

Here is an auto thief that actually returns a 5 month-old baby. He only wanted to steal a car, didn't realize there was a baby inside.

My friend tells that something interesting once happened to her boyfriend. When he was a kid (8-9 years old), he was playing outside and saw two masked men rushing towards another house. He got scared but both men told him ''Oh I'm sorry kid. Didn't mean to scare you. You can continue playing. We're going to leave now'' and both left, not to be heard from nor seen again.

Several of them actually have a soft spot for babies and children. Is it astonishing how they're not that bad? They just want to steal cars, rob houses or bank but care about a child's safety.

Not really; desperation may make you do terrible things, but it needn't take away EVERY good thing about you.

More likely, though, it was just pragmatism; the police are going to go HARD after a kidnapped child. A stolen car is a lower priority, and probably has lower punishment if they're caught.

They don’t want to add kidnapping to the charges if they get caught and they are stealing not hurting anyone or killing so it’s just considered grand larceny as long as they don’t use force or a weapon, thieves are not killers unless they become really desperate

No, because he didn't do that out of the goodness of his heart. He didn't want to get kidnapping, possibly child endangerment tacked onto his charges if he got caught.

I wouldn't call most criminals lawyer level smart. But a lot of them know some of the laws. Like drug dealers for example. They'll carry just enough drugs on them typically to avoid major prosecution if caught holding. They can always re-up from a stash house nearby if they run low or run out. But why risk serious time if they can avoid it.

And there's a difference between crime and violent crime. Stealing a car is just theft. Kidnapping is major time. It's simply not worth it.

If you understand anything about crime, it’s not surprising at all. With exception to sex crimes and hate crimes, all criminal acts can be linked to external factors - mainly not having enough money to get by and struggling to find a job that pays enough for one to live. They just want the money that comes from the crime, they don’t want to hurt people, certainly not children.

Evil is just stupidity dramatized.
People tend to think that a person can't make bad choices unless they are sadistic, but the reality is people have different ideas about what is or isn't justified.
In many cases those are "justifications" are wrong, but it does result in contradictory moral behavior sometimes.

Steal a car and the police don't care. Steal a baby and they soon put down their doughnuts. Few months jail v several years for kidnap? I know which I'd choose

Well maybe because if he stole that baby and say killed it he would have extra charges in court…

So this has nothing to do with morals, the guy just did what he needed to do to shave off potential time served in prison upon getting caught

Not at all. All of us have selective ethics and morals with lines that we will and will not cross.

Stealing a car is just theft but stealing a car with a baby inside is kidnapping. You get serious jailntime for that
