What's the oddest advice you've ever offered anyone?

We're all hack psychologists/mentors on this site, but in your actual lives, what's the oddest advice you've had to dispense to another person?

I remember in college, a lady who was a friend of mine called saying she was going to a guy's apartment to hang out and go in the hot tub. She said that they guy told her that he had enough gas to pick her up, but not enough gas to bring her back home. So she asked if I could "be on call" for when she needed to go back to her apartment. My advice was of course, that if a guy said something nutty like he didn't have enough gas to get her home, he obviously had certain motives. Sure enough he approached her for sex and she called me to come and pick her up. LOL... Odd advice because I think it should have been obvious... lol

It should have been … my friends and I were told about that move when we were ~16 or so. Oldest trick in the book….

@DishLady Well, I think in the back of her mind, she knew that it was a scheme. I remember when I picked her up, I didn't lecture her about it. It wasn't in my nature to "lecture" anyway. LOL... I talked to her on the phone about twenty years after this, and she remembered going to the guy's apartment but she doesn't remember me being "on call" to pick her up.

@DishLady Now that I'm thinking about this... LOL... About ten years after this, a friend of mine from college was visiting with the guy who invited this lady over. Then that lady's name came up as someone who they both knew in college. He said, "Oh yeah... I had her in the hot tub one night..." That wasn't exactly how the story went... LOL

Ye live on instinct do away with modern comforts most people find this weird but it's essential to me every now and again to just disappear and get back to basics

I do retreats regularly to reconnect with my instincts, yes, esp after the 10-year marriage (ignoring my gut feelings about red flags). Back on track, thankfully, and not taking * from anyone once my instinct prompts me.

Do you take it to the extreme so it's not a holiday or fun at first until you become accustomed to it, then it feels amazing and can really appreciate nature in all its ways

No no, quarterly retreats, like a self "check in" at different places I find relaxing where I can be alone. I'm trying to remember if the very first one was like holiday... Maybe. But now it's just "time to go" and recalibrate. "Mediterranean Reboot"

Well, the weirdest was to a friend named Chris. He got to where he would call me once a week on work night at about 3 or 3:30. Everytime he started, "I'm gonna kill myself." I would be on the phone till almost 5:30, the time I had to get ready for work. I put up with it 3 weeks in a row. But I surprised myself the fourth one. i knew who was calling and sure enough, 'm"Im gonna blow my head off."
I said do it. Go ahead and do it. Just stop calling me and waking me up.
He apologized and hungup.

Yeah, he's still kickin', but as Lynne says, a pyscho. He doesn't like me anymore because I kind of took Lynne's side. He ended up going to a psychiatrist.

Well it's good he at least went to get the help he needs!

Yeah, but he is the one that said he was going to kick my ass if I said Lynne again. Heh. Then he came by a year later drunk and I had quit. He took it as an insult that I didn't drink a beer with him. I guess he didn't believe I had quit.

I tried to talk my best friend out of getting married. I really tried. I had a good logical argument and when that did not work i tried to I tried to appeal to his sense of adventure. He did it anyway.

I've been in your shoes before as well. I have a sense about couples and can see when they won't work (95% correct, ironically the missing 5% was my own marriage).

he ended up getting divorced. He was married 3 more times after that. He died last year with wife number 4.

we had been friends since second grade. He moved about 60 miles away 20 years ago so we only saw each other a few times a year. 4 years ago he moved to North carolina and I told him i would buy him a steak dinner before he left. The Covid happened and things got screwed up and the next thing i knew he was gone.
I am planning on driving to Florida next spring and NC is about halfway there. I was planning on seeing him.
