Does the “do not disturb” sign actually mean anything?

I don’t think I have ever not been disturbed after hanging that sign. Let’s say it’s the weekend so I hang the sign to try and sleep in a bit, I can guarantee that at about 10am the housekeeping will knock on the door and try to come in the room anyway.
