How to stop projecting on others or assuming?

Ask questions. When you find yourself answering questions in your mind just find a way to ask from the source. It’s virtually impossible not to project at all bc that’s part of how we understand others, by trying to relate.. it happens automatically. It’s good it means we are empathetic creatures but it can get out of hand if we’re just imagining reality.

A good way to balance this is to ask questions to help you understand them.

If they don’t want to shower things or they don’t want you to understand them or if you don’t know them personally to make asking questions awkward, then you don’t need to worry about thinking anything at all. Just move on with your life.

We don’t have to or have the right to know everything about everyone. It if people are in your life, then ask 🙂

Remember that the first thought that comes into your mind in any given situation is what you have been taught to think, and you can correct it with your actual thoughts that follow immediately after.


For example, you see a woman in an exposing outfit and your first thought is “how slutty, she looks like a prostitute.” You can then immediately follow it up with “but it’s her body, she can wear whatever she wants.” And go back to your own business, confident in knowing your assumption doesn’t matter because you’re both strangers with more important things to do than assume things about others.

This is a big empathy thing, but I like to start by assuming that people generally do things that make sense to them. I also generally assume that everybody I meet knows something that I don't.

I find that once I keep those things in mind, I can approach most people by wanting to figure out where they're coming from, instead of thinking I can guess.

Start each new interaction by reminding yourself that the new person is a unique individual who is not responsible for what others have done. and when you start to slip into the old pattern, remind yourself of this. It really should be that simple.

Meditation. You're projecting bacause of unresolved thoughts. Lock yourself in a room, close your eyes and focus on these things until they don't consume you constantly
