At what age did you move out?

Question

I really want to move out.

I love my family but it’s time for me to have my own space and independence.

But I don’t want to pay rent so I’ll need to buy a place and in this economy that’s very hard right now.

I’m putting that goal out there and I’ll work for it. Hopefully it will happen.

The only way I can see doing that now is to get a couple of responsible roommates together and rent. I would never recommend buying a home with someone you aren't married to, though. Too much risk.

The other option is to rent an RV space monthly and live in an RV, although in some places that's expensive, too. If your parents have (or someone you know and trust has) room, you could buy an RV and park it on their place and pay them a low rent. You'll need to either pay to get hookups installed or get a service to pump your tank every so often. Make sure you make a contract and both of you sign and date it. It's a reference so that you all understand what the agreement is. Your parents might like having the RV hookups installed on their property for later in life.

My parents would joke that they would kick me out when I turned 18 but really I didn’t fully move out until I was about 23 because I had to move to another city relatively far away to pursue my dream career.

shit man of course it's hard to move out. people treat real estate like a lifelong investment. meaning they buy a house for 100k and their dreams are crushed if it isn't at least 200k by the time they sell it a decade later.

there's also no jobs. gone are the days of kids going around the neighborhood asking to do lawn work. ADULTS have to do that nowadays to make a living. the jobs are gone. where? honestly somebody needs to explain where they went.

I physically moved out when I was 17, but I was still mostly, but not entirely, supported by my parents. Their support gradually decreased over the next few years, so it didn't happen all at once. I don't know when I was completely independent financially. Maybe 19-21? I know that's a wide range, but I don't remember.

I moved out when I was 18. I moved around for a bit and lived with different people. I think I got my first actual apartment around 20/21. Wasn’t in the city (or close) and it was basically a hobbit hole so it was really inexpensive. I didn’t have any savings or make a lot of money for awhile since I left home a few months after graduating. I upgraded significantly since then. But if you’re working and still live at home you should hopefully have some savings. You might not get something as nice as your current living arrangement but you will get there and honestly it gives you motivation to work harder/succeed even more than you are currently

21. I graduated college, moved back home. That lasted 7 months. I just couldn't live with them again after being independent.  It's tough today but you've got this!!! You'll never regret it!! 😁

It sounds funny, but I didn't move out. My mom moved out when I was 17. She got married and just moved a few blocks away. Wild times. Dogs and Daiquiris don't mix.

Technically I haven't. My paternal grandfather passed away when I was four and left me the house but gave my dad a life trust to it. When my dad passed ten years ago I received full legal ownership of the house and still live here.
