Is the ''What did you just say'' reconfirmation meant to place fear, submission?

That's always done in these situations:

- An abusive relationship, as in ''oh how dare you defy me, say it to my face'' and then if you say it, it's followed by a slap, punch or a beating.

- One of those old-fashioned parents ready to spank with a belt or other hard household objects unless you said ''No, nothing'', which is then followed by a warning.

- Your teacher or another person of authority and if you repeat what you said, it's a detention or suspension unless you said ''No, nothing''.

- When someone is ready to fight you and is daring you to repeat it again in their faces, unless you back down.

Either way, it's always meant to place some type of fear, submission isn't it? They heard it very clearly the first time.

It's like you're doomed in any of those cases. You get busted in many different ways if you proceed to repeating what you said.
