What would you do if you encountered an opposum?

I would stop, watch it for a minute, and be happy to see it. But I would just let it do it's thing and not bother it.
Possums are good people, great to have around. They are like a sanitation crew, cleaning up rotting fruit, carrion, garden pests, etc. They don't attack pets but they will eat pet food that's left outside.
Some people think they are ugly. They look scary when the open their mouths and hiss. But I like them. They are totally non-aggressive.
Watch it run away.
I have semi feral cats. they live outside but I feed them and some of them are lap cats. I also have raccoons and occasional possum In my yard. one night, I watched a raccoon and a possum eating together out of my cat food dish glaring at each other while the Big Daddy Cat sat by and watched them dispassionately. Like he was watching tv. The only thing he showed was curiosity.
I have farm cats. Same experience here as you. Except I also get coyotes.
@MannMitAntworten They have invaded the suburbs Same as illegal aliens. And one of them ate one of my cats too. Or maybe it was a Haitian.
They have always been around the area here. They just seem to multiply faster now.
Like a guy playing opposum or an actual one?
The guys, you block.
The creature you walk away from slowly bc contrary to the popular metaphor they'll chase and bite, especially if they think you're threatening their young. Call EPA to have them caged and removed from your premises.
A little well known fact about the opposums.
The female has 2 vagina's and the male has 2 penises.

Nothing. I have. They play dead.
Actually the last opossum I encountered I wacked with a broom and it ran off.
I was standing on our covered deck and looked down over the edge to the ground below and there was one eating on the birdseed that had spilled from the feeder down to the ground. There was a broom on the deck so I reached over and jabbed it as hard as I could with the broom handle. It ran off.
I did just two nights ago. I went out on the back porch and he was sitting there eating corn on the cob that he had found in the trash. He gave me a very human-like look that said, "You're not going to interrupt my meal are you?" And I looked back with my eyes that said, "No, you just enjoy your meal, you creepy little bastard."
I did the other day. I couldāve bent down and just picked it up. We just looked at each other as we passed our separate ways. Interesting creatures. Theyāre North Americas only marsupial and quite successful. Theyāve seemed to be able to move into urban areas. They have very short lifespans of only about two natural years but in trade for that is an immune system like no other. Theyāre even immune to rabies
protect it...
the particular species around here is protected... lo
there's actually two species protected...
the "cacomixtle"... and the "tlacuache"
I have encountered an opossum. We have a few living in our neighborhood. One just leaves them alone.
i would try to pet it, but Iād probably end up getting hissed at or nipped haha
Nothing , they usually will run the other way , I did have a friend that would grab them by the tail and swing them around and launch it as far as he could , he was nuts but it was funny to watch
Do? Nothing. They are cute little animals. And the only marsupial in North America. Leave them alone.
Be rather shocked since we don't have them in NZ we have possums which look entirely different
Leave it alone, they don't bother me. Useful little guys
I encounter one daily. I do nothing but say, āHi O. P.ā
Just keep walking They donāt fight you i they are just real nasty looking
See if its open to petting, see it probably be anxious and then just observe from a distance.
Nothing. They are so cute.
Nothing much, they are harmless and donāt carry rabies because their body temperature being lower
I trapped him under a garbage can. Put a brick on it then contemplated my options. Tune in tomorrow for part two!!
Take the brick off, lift up the garbage can, and watch him or her waddle away.
About 15 years ago a friend found an opossum in his garage one night. It wasn't doing anything other than checking the place out.
This guy freaked and called the cops. They actually showed up. The cop dragged it out onto the lawn by its tail, pulled his M1911 and killed it with a 45ACP round.
Why the fuck would someone do that? It's a slow moving 3 lb animal. They aren't aggressive. If my friend gave it 30 minutes, it would have wandered back out of the garage after taking inventory and finding nothing to eat.
Depends if I was just walking down the street and saw it id just continue walking if I was crawling under a house I'd just back away
I've encountered an opossum multiple times. It always results in them screaming at me, me screaming at them, them playing dead. And me running like a bitch
Hmmm, I see these dead all the time, run over. Im not sure I've ever encountered one up close, I've seen them run across the street?
Back away and get as far away from it as possible. They're vicious little critters and won't hesitate to sink their teeth into you if you get near them.
Ignore it like I do with every other wild animal I encountered.
Leave it alone. Those things wipe out all sorts of nasty critters.
I would give him a good leaving alone.
like all the other times
leave it alone
@QuietRunner you look like an opposum
@EmmiL ty
i have
you just mind your business lol
Leave it alone. They are beneficial animals.
Possum fritters.
I'd probably play dead
Let him bite my finger... 🤪
Play dead?
š you said it first!
I would give the opposum something to eat.
Challenge it to a dance battle.
walk the other way
Iād just ignore it.
Put it in the potā¦
