Have you ever “MacGyvered” your way through something?

Question

I often find I have to fix or get something done using an unconventional tool — like bolting a cart to the door with a coffee straining stand, refastening my top with a paper clip or using the infamous all-purpose duct tape for a quick fix of a million little things… What’s your “MacGyver” moment?

I'm an engineer. We often have to be creative to solve issues.

For example, we had this railroad control computer system that would repeatedly fail if there was no activity on its system console. So we wrote a simple Turtle Race program that kept the system console busy. Problem solved... until the company President saw it and made us turn it off, despite our protests. A few hours later, sure enough, it failed, bringing his railroad to a halt until it was restarted... this time with Turtle Race running.

Yes, I do these things on almost a daily basis!!! I had saved some seldom-used aluminum file cabinet support rails. Recently- several years after saving the pieces- I used one as a "splint" + 6 pop-rivets to repair a plastic shelf frame in our fridge. A replacement would have been $100+ plus shipping, once the out-of-stock supply had been replenished.

Yes, many times. One time at the college i worked for there was a bit conference hall that had a pair of old speakers in the ceiling. My boss wanted this room to be used for presentations. It needed a screen and additional electronics. I was able to piece together scraps from the storage room. Some of the equipment was never used like that before but i got it all to work and the price was right.

Ha! My parents used to call me "MacGyver" when I was younger. I liked making all sorts of guns and spaceships and stuff out of tin foil, cardboard, and duct tape.

Just about everyday. I keep a small backpack with a multitool that can do most rudimentary things. The rest I leave to duct tape and WD-40.
