Do you recycle or simply throw everything in the garbage?

I put recyclables in separate recycling containers. However, i have seen the trucks come and dump both garbage cans and recycling cans into the same compactor. I’ve also worked at landfills and seen metric tons of recyclable trash there, being buried.
I have also previously worked at a paper plant that produced recycled products. I have been inside of a heavy metals recycler. Which makes sense because they actually buy scrap metals. However, i’ve never been in a recycler for tin cans, glass or plastic. But i have been to a sorting station. I’ve been inside two bottling plants; neither of which had recycling equipment of any kind.
My experience and observation suggests that recycling isn’t the game changer that “they” want us to think it is. So i’m not nearly as committed to the whole idea as i once was. If i have to pay for it, it’s probably a scam. If they’re buying the materials, it’s almost certainly being recycled in some meaningful way.

Recycling is mandatory here. We have separation for glass, plastics+metals, paper/carton and general waste. Old batteries go back to a collection bin in the supermarkets. For larger household machinery you have to call an individual pickup or the store selling you the new machine takes care of it.

We have black container for general trash, small brown container or brown bags for bio trash, yellow bags for packaging, green bags for glass, blue begs for paper, steel containers for ashes if you have fireplace. You aren't obliged to recycle but you will pay much more. Now costs trash for house like mine around 400 PLN (120USD) annually without trash separation it will cost 1500PLN

I try to help the cause. But this country is designed to be a throw away society. So whatever a person does to recycle Is such a minuscule part of the big picture. It doesn’t really make much of a difference.
Last time I was in Alaska. I was told that they used aluminum water bottles. Because it was easier to recycle. Maybe they have something there!

Our area does not support recycling, so everything goes in the garbage.
