With the 24th anniversary this Thursday, I wanted to ask this question.
I was in 5th grade and my class was about to review the previous evening's homework. Right before we got started, my teacher was called outside. When she came back inside, she told us what happened. For the rest of that day, parents came in droves to pick up their children. Such a sad, tragic day in our history.
I was a freshman in college who lived in a dorm named "The Towers" because there were two of them which I found highly ironic. Prior to that moment, I felt so lucky that I didn't have a roommate because they'd found off campus housing, but when my alarm went off that morning, which was a tv alarm, through blurred eyes, I saw something burning, but I was still half asleep. When my second audio alarm went off I finally woke up and rolled over to see the tv in full and could not believe my eyes. It panicked me. All the things that were being said, mentions of terrorism on home soil, and potentially more attacks. I felt incredibly alone, because I was. Instinctively I called my brother but he never picked up and didn't return my call, so I called my mom. I asked her what I should do or what and she had no idea, she was in shock herself.
After that, I can only describe the rest of the day like being in a weird dream. I floated down the hall trying to see if there was anyone I could talk to, even though it was so early into school, I knew no one on the floor personally but there wasn't a soul in the halls, no one in the bathrooms, literally no one anywhere. I got ready for class because I didn't know what else to do and classes were not cancelled. My first one was political science of all things, and again, in the strangest turn of events, the one teacher you thought would say something, did not. He didn't mention a word even though someone asked a question about it. He said, it wasn't for him to discuss and just kept on with class like nothing happened. When I got out of class, I finally found one of my friends waiting for another class, and asked him about it, and he said, he hadn't heard a word (by this time it was like 11:30am)!?! I thought I was going crazy until we got the message that classes had been cancelled for the rest of the day.
I was in fourth grade and I was at school at the time. I remember being able to see out the classroom door to one slightly down the hall that also had its door open. Their tv was on, smoke/a building was coming down on screen (only saw it for a moment), and a teacher quickly shut the door. I remember being confused, and slightly jealous, because kids kept going home that day. We were playing a game in my class and eventually my mom picked me and my brother up. I realized something might actually be wrong when we got my sister from the Highschool and we all went to my grandparents. I can still remember the tv playing at my grandparents as everything came out. My mom was supposed to be in NYC when it happened, she would have been in one of the buildings near the towers
I worked in a "customer service call center" at Disney World on the "late second shift" back then... I was supposed to have the whole night off from work (I normally worked Tuesday nights, but I had switched my nights off that week because one of my co-workers needed that Sunday night off to go to her family reunion), and I was planning on going to EPCOT that afternoon to meet up with my friend who was visiting from out of town... I was just about to head out the door of my apartment when my phone rang (I normally turned the ringer off on the nights that I was not working, but I had the ringer on at that time just in case my friend needed to call), so I immediately grabbed the phone without looking at the "caller ID" and started to talk right away to who I thought was my friend... turned out it was my supervisor calling to ask me if I could come in to work overtime that very afternoon (which was unusual, because my supervisor knew I had another full-time job and she would normally only ask me to pick up overtime shifts if I was already at work)... obviously, I asked her why she needed me (because mid-September was usually a very slow time at my job and usually a slower time at Disney World in general)... she then proceeded to tell me about what had happened on 9/11 (so far) and that Disney World might be another target and that the phones were ringing off the hook since all of the parks were suddenly closed and the hotels were all put on "lock-down"... so I agreed to come in to work, and I worked an overtime shift on a "national tragedy day" (I still feel kind of guilty about it to this day, and I will never forget the people who asked me if Disney would still be charging them for their cancelled vacations)...
I was taking some classes at CCNY, I had a test that morning. Beautiful morning. I was checking out the news back then on my iMac G3, MSNBC online. I believe. I left my apartment (Mt. Vernon, NY) around 9:00am, nothing had come through on the internet yet to my knowledge. I merged onto the Saw Mill River pkwy. traffic was stopped, not sure what time it was at this point, maybe 9:20am. I had the radio off as I thought about the test ahead. I turned on the radio to WFAN NY, The Don Imus show was on, the airwaves were silent, until one of the hosts said i can't believe what I am seeing on the TV, and described that planes had crashed into both towers. I immediately exited the Parkway at the Mt. Vernon exit and headed home. I tried calling my brother who worked at the Deutsch Bank building located near the towers. Cell phones did not work that morning at all, we did not hear from him until around 3pm that day, thank god! F-16s flew overt the skies for the next few days. A very scary time!

I was at work at General Electric Power Systems in Schenectady NY. Almost certainly, American Airlines Flight 11 which crashed into the North Tower flew overhead while I was just getting started at work.
It was an unreal day and, as a native NYer who had been in both towers multiple times, it was very upsetting. My friend lost her cop husband that day but I didn't learn this until 18 months later in March 2003 when her parents, whom I was visiting, were shocked when I asked about the dead husband. The mother looked at me in disbelief and gently shook her head no and quietly asked me "(my name), you don't know, do you?" I was perplexed. "Know what?" "(cop husband) died in 9/11." There was silence for a bit after that. I always thought he was a douche but he did die heroically; he was off work that day, but went to help. He left his wife, my friend, with 3 young children the oldest being 10.
I was in 1st grade. At the time, my dad was in the military, and we were stationed at Fort Knox. I remember sitting in class when suddenly some of the parents of my classmates started coming to pick them up. Shortly afterwards, I saw soldiers and tanks scrambling outside the classroom window (they though the gold depository on base could've been a potential target). My mom didn't know how to tell me, so she left me at school. Our teacher never told us anything and tried to keep the rest of the day as normal as she could. I had to wait until I got home and saw it on TV and my mom tried explaining it. I just remember being very confused as to why someone would do that.
I was making deliveries to lumberyards heading to Brooklyn but only got as far as Queens and had to just finish up there but I could clearly see the black smoke from the Trade centers filling up the sky drifting south, I remember it was a beautiful Tuesday morning and couldn’t believe all the fire trucks coming from every district as I was driving in Queens
Back then I was a truck driver and was making a delivery at a pizzeria. The manager had the tv on and told me wtc was hit. I had to finish my route. The company i worked for was contracted by the salvation army to deliver food every day to the workers at ground zero, the medical examiners office and the landfill where the debris was brought to. I was the driver that was chosen to deliver to the 3 sites.

I was in a school bus heading to our city's Art Museum. We got there; our teacher got a call on her cell phone. We all got back in the bus and went back to school. Our principal told us. He really should have since my uncle worked in the second tower that was hit. He was fine, he actually evacuated his office as soon as the first tower was hit. However, we didn't know that until hours later.
Living in the western US, when I got up that morning, it had already happened. I turned on my computer while making some coffee and I saw it on the internet news. I was in shock as I was drinking my coffee. I emailed a couple of friends right away. I went to work and the atmosphere was somber.
College and I was sent home. I live in NY. I thought it was the beginning of WW3 and before we knew what really was happening I thought NY was going to be under attack which was terrifying.
I had a cell phone back then thankfully which wasn't on everyone yet back then, but was able to contact all my loved ones and I realized my immediate family was ok.
I lost a cousin that was a first responder. I didn't know him well but it was awful to find out and extremely upsetting.
I remember exactly where I was , it was evening in Australia , big desktop computer and I was chatting in ICQ ( remember that? ) the girl I was chatting to " turn on the TV , just turn on the TV " watch the last one hit..

I had just started a new job it had. been my first day , ended up working their 10 years.
I was just coming to work, to find the place locked up. I walked in, the boss, and one of my coworkers was there. I asked what was going on, had he just pointed to the TV screen. I sat down and watched. We had lunch there, and then I went home. The boss insisted we stay closed that day.
I remember the day vividly I live 10 minutes away from Manhattan I was at work and I had somebody that would just made a delivery done at the trade centers and on his way back the plane just first plane just hit the buildings so I remember smoke the fire and everything I saw it first hand I mean I wasn't but I was as close as you can probably get to it without being there

I was thrown into a world where 9/11 changed America politically, socially, economically, culturally, and globally.
It is a sad tragic and terrible day which should never be forgotten. A dark chapter in American History.

u I was in 8th grade. We'd just finished taking a class photo when one of my teachers pulled me aside to tell me what was going on (my dad had been flying that morning; wasn't anywhere near it though).
I was in college at the time. Since my school was local I still lived at home and commuted to class each day. I had no early morning class that day and slept in. And my mother woke me up that day by busting into my bedroom shouting, "we're under attack".😆
It was on TV when I got up to get ready for work. I was 47 years old. My wife and I had been married for 5 years and were living in Redondo Beach, CA.
I was working street patrol as an LEO. Our inspector's voice came over our 2 way radio telling us to return to the squad room immediately. It was a fucked up day, I'll never forget that chill feeling
I want born yet. My father was working a job on a high rise building. He watched in awe as the first and second planes hit. Then as they both fell. He went to try to help those that were trapped and later worked on clearing up the rubble.
I was working, speaking to a client. He told me to turn on my TV and hung-up. My colleagues gathered around a TV and watched in disbelief! Some cried, some got sick. Boss came in and told everybody to go home. It was like a bad dream or horror movie!
I was Working across the river in New Jersey. They shut the plant down and sent everyone home. It took 6 hours to get home (Philadelphia normally an hour or so away) because all the bridges were closed.
Not from US. But remember it. I was at work, we'd just moved buildings, was unpacking. Put TV's on and watched it all unfold.

At my college dorm. I did go to my first two classes, my 2nd class teacher decided to cancel class. Then a little while later the college decided to cancel all classes.

It wasn’t that early since the first tower got hit at 8:46 AM that Tuesday morning and I was already on the road and then the second tower got hit 20 minutes later for optimum affect to kill everyone, so that’s why I saw all the firetrucks heading that way from every district in Queens and Brooklyn where I was

I was living in Los Angeles. I was a late sleeper back in those days. I probably did not wake up until around 10 am California time. When I woke up I turned on the TV and saw what had happened.
