I would describe religion as a booster and not as a shield, you can be religious and still get sick, but religion might boost your mood and your peace while you are sick. My pastor told me God might let you have problems but he might adjust the time duration you go through them or the rewards you get for going through them. In the bible, the poor man was poor all his life and then he went to heaven. Others began poor and became rich before they died. God does not promise 100% equality on earth, but he promises 100% mercy and compensation for those who endure and survive it and persevere in it, even if some only get their reward when they go to heaven.
