Mother nature created cell division limit in all organism on this planet. According to studies there are some swam sorts in arctic that don't have this mechanic but those are primitive organisms which didn't change much in last 3 billion years. From evolutionary reference point mortality ensures replacement of outdated organism with improved ones. Of course dying is against programming of life that wants to prevail as long as possible, so we have a dilemma here.
100% immortality will never exist but at some point our science will be able to reduce aging or transfer our consciousness to reparable bodies mode of nano bot or mechanic parts. However this is a problem on one living being on this planet will face soon and if it exist it will cause some kind of stagnation.
Possibly because mortality is part of what gives life its meaning. Knowing our time is limited makes us appreciate people more… the experiences and the little things we tend to take for granted. I can’t imagine what humanity would become if nobody ever died lol..
Love the pic you used by the way..

absofuckinglutely... yes
it would create the most vicious cycle ever
we already act in very inhumane ways because our egotistical idea of generational wealth... and the thoughts of our wealth, power and influence to be immortalized in passing it over...
so now imagine all these despicable people actually staying for centuries... lmfao
will be my last day as a manager
The dream of immortality is basically a pure childish one, not aware of how boring life would be. In a movie, "Lucy", a professor explains that for a living being, there are two options: immortality, and reproduction. Obviously living beings have choosen reproduction...
By the way, in all logic a self conscious AI would choose eternity. Sure you understand what I mean.
In a way it would. If no one dies, eventually there will be no room for children. Assuming we were able to maintain youthful health forever, I think eventually people would be committing suicide to escape the boredom. There would be little reason to do anything, because there would always be tomorrow.
Without the need to reproduce I fear we would become inward-looking, intellectually stagnant and boring.
And before abuse arrives, I'm not saying an individual needs children to avoid that outcome, rather that a society would struggle to escape that end.
Our world would be overcrowded, so our resources would end quickly. So yes, it would be the end of humanity in this sense.
However, I wish I was immortal. Death seems terrible to me.
Depends on what kind of immortality. If it's vampire-like, or zombie-like immortality, then the answer is yes. If it's like in Highlander, probably not.
If we ever reach where babies are raised by robot moms, then yeah… that's when we’ll know we’ve gone too far..
Most certainly. There would be no hope of getting rid of the bad apples of humanity.
If we were immortal, there would be no end to the harm on Earth; wicked people could bring about the end of the world.
More likely to be helpful in our survival as robots are immortal and may increase in number and influence later
Of course.
What makes us human is that we live, produce offspring to continue the species, and die.
I've had too many nightmares about being immortal.
Nope! Super AI will be! The Technological Singularity!
No. Immortality would save humans from dying. Thats why its called immortality. Its a cure for aging disease.
I dont know but I'd love to be immortal and never get sick again
@Nikki1989 Not necessarily
