+1 yThey are expensive, tacky, and inhumane. Yes, I eat meat, but not on my own guidelines. My dad makes me, plus I would like to become a vegetarian but it might be extremley hard since I was raised eating meat. So I am so used to the taste I probably will never entirely quite. I just don't like the idea of wearing an animal for no purpose other than looking good. Meat gives you protein and keeps you healthy. If you like it go ahead but you may get some dirty glares from me. My friend wore a bunny tail scarf and I cussed her out. I mean what is the point of that?! Yes its warm but there are other coats and scarfs that are just as warm. And if you really like the look of fur get a faux. Simple as that. They are less expensive and no animals were harmed. I feel the same about leather. Faux is the way to go.

My dad raised me on meat and I still eat it because that is what he cooks for dinner. I do want to be a vegetarian but it might be very hard since I grew up eating meat. Unlike meat fur coats have no purpose. Meat has protein and is good for your metabolism. You wear fur just to look good. Yah, it keeps you warm but so does other coats. Go ahead and wear it if you want but if you run into me expect to get some dirty glares. I mean if you really like the style that much just wear faux. Its less expensive and no cute little animals were harmed in the making. Same with leather, except when it comes to shoes and such. You can't really do anything there.

+1 yWith modern sensibilities, I would like to see regulation supporting farmed fur animals being kept and euthanized as humanely as possible. Those with this expensive taste should be willing to pay the price for humane conditions. I would also legislate domestic only as a means of avoiding the Chinese and others from circumventing humane regulation. On the other hand, I would want heavy legislation and enforcement against anything endangered.
That said, mink, ermine and chinchilla can be stunning furs.20 Reply
There is no ethical or functional difference between wearing fur and wearing leather. If you wear leather and condemn fur you are a hypocrite.

I disagree... Beef is one of the most highly consumed meats in America so most of the leather products you see are coming from cows who were already being killed for food anyway. The types of animals that are killed to make fur coat however (mink, fox, etc.) aren't typically used for food so they're being killed ONLY for their fur.
- +1 y
@UberTroll: What you are saying is pointless: Animals being killed for food are still being killed. Killing animals for food is as important as killing them for fur because they are both for survival. We need food to survive. We also need fur and/or leather to keep warm and thus to survive as well.

I'm against it both because I don't believe in killing an innocent animal for it's fur. I could never hunt, even if it's for the meat. I couldn't bring myself to kill an animal. I'd rather starve in the wild and die than do that. I've seen videos of people clubbing animals, and then skinning them while they're still alive. It's insanely cruel and I don't understand how anyone could have the mental capacity to do something like that to something so innocent.
I also hate the look of fur on clothing. I think it looks tacky and just down right stupid. However, to each their own.
Also, I am kind of a hypocrite. I eat meat, I don't think I could ever give up a good cheeseburger. But I have cut back on my meat consumption. I definitely don't agree with killing an animal for it's fur though. That I am totally against.31 ReplyI like them, but probably wouldn't actually wear a full fur coat.
Instead, I'd rather buy pelts of humanely treated animals, and embellish certain things with it.
Honestly, though, I don't see a problem with wearing them. The animal is already dead, it's not like you can bring it back by refusing to wear the fur :/
Mind you, I'm not a fan of killing the animal for JUST the fur. That's disgusting and wrong. 'Tis why any fur I do buy, comes from this little Native shop, where the animal was completely used, and respected. Or from thrift shops, where the fur is very old.10 ReplyI think fur coats are OK, but if one is against fur, then WHY THE H**L wear coats imitating fur? Why go against something, and then wear something that looks like it? It'd be like me supporting Glasgow Celtics, but wear the Glasgow Rangers shirt... makes no sence...
32 Reply- +1 y
I agree, especially since people that are against fur but wearing fake fur would pretty much be encouraging others to get fur products. Afterall, it's not like people can tell if a fur coat is real or fake, unless they analyse the coat at a very close distance, which obviously is hardly what happens.

Regarding fake fur. Probably the same reason people eat soy beef, or tofu turkey. It's getting the thing you want without it weighing on you that something had to die. It's not so much promoting, as it is provision of an alternative.
Asker+1 yisnt that still glorifying animal fur? soy/tofu stuff isn't made to look like real meat like faux fur attempts to do.

No, some soy and tofu is still made to look like real meats. I've had some. (though it was usually given to me) As for the fur, it's not still glorifying the fur itself. Just the look of it. Only without the guilt of people associating it (or trying to) with murder.

If you're gonna eat meat, there's nothing wrong with using the rest of the critter. I don't know about raising and killing one just for its skin though. Seems like a waste and my ethics say if I'm gonna kill something I should use as much of it as possible.23 Reply- +1 y
i agree but that if your gonna use an animal for meat use the rest too. but that's not how they make the fur, when they make fur coats the animal they use is used only for the fur and the rest is wasted or mulched into pet food. and the animals are treated poorly before they are usedwhich is what I have a problem with. the fact that they are tortured before hand. if it was done more humane I wouldn't have a problem with it
+1 yFur is sickening. Just google Chinese fur factories. They take animals in cages and electrocute them, if they are lucky, but more often times they skin the poor animal while alive. I think its heinous that we still wear fur even though our technology has allowed us to wear synthetic materials that are much cheaper and just as nice.

Anonymous(36-45)+1 yJust remember while your sitting there feeling amazing & looking just dapper. That animal was stuck in some trap left to bleed, freeze then suffer to death, usually 2-3 days or longer. It's not like cows who are humanely shot in the temple with a bolt gun & killed instantly. If it's Mink that looks good on you, over 50 of them suffered in a trap just so you can look good.
Maybe that's why they went out of style in the 60s, except for Willie Dynamite the pimp & white haired old ladies.1011 Reply- +1 y
all of the stuff you are saying is completely false. trapped animals are not left for days. if they were they would chew off their own leg and their fur would be a waste...go hunting/trapping and learn about it before you make false statements.
Opinion Owner+1 yFor every humane trapper there is a In-Humane trapper who only cares about money & if you think otherwise then you live in a cave. YOU go learn before you make statements & stop being so naive. I have seen documentaries & heard from old friends joking who do go coon hunting with barbed wire, & you are right, they do TRY to chew their limbs off but usually die beforehand.
Asker+1 yyeah modern hunters & trappers dont. sportsmen don't do that crap either. documentaries are biased and never show the good guys or what happened just before the camera came on. barbed wire is illegal too. if an animal is left in a trap for days it becomes worthless so only trash does that.
Opinion Owner+1 yI agree 100% with what you are saying. And yes they do also have humane farms but, what I am saying, & do know, there are trappers who are down right cruel, & a lot of them. I don't need someone to tell me to learn, when I know for a fact there are cruel trappers who have nothing on their mind but $$$, & a lot of them. And I still think that 50 animals die just so someone can "Look good" is ucked. Just my opinion.

Rabbits, sheep, chinchillas and (I think) minks as well, are all farmed for their fur, and the rabbits and sheep are eaten. All are killed quickly and humanely. Actually it's not... it's promoting synthetic fur which doesn't harm animals. You can still have the look and feel of fur without the bloodshed.11 Reply
Anonymous(30-35)+1 yI hate that people justify that they like fur coats by saying things like its soft and a fashionable, etc. Its called murder, maybe not in the human-context but essentially its soft because it was taken from an animal in its prime. It is disgusting to see people killing innocent animals for profit and fashion, as if material gain justifies killing an animal. Don't even bother saying things like we kill cows for food and things like that because that is justifiable, it is a necessity and is an Animal Instinct, also a lot of them are not killed in their prime. Fashion is not a necessity or part of our Animal Instincts.

Murder is when you kill humans, and if you think that animals that are butchered for food aren't "in their prime" then you don't know the first thing about where your food comes from. Furthermore, meat is NOT a necessity, so you should become a vegan if you feel this strongly about it.

I wear fur, there will always be fur coats. Humans have hunted for thousands of years the same way and it will never change. I personally would not buy an endangered animal fur, but I would wear it If I had it but not in a very populace place and sparingly.
Like the Native Americans - respect what nature gives them.02 Reply- +1 y
My family owns 4-5? fur coats. One or two of them are from animals that continue to live.
It really depends on your location, use, your values... the problem with the fur trade is actually a government problem. Governments these days are spineless, and are afraid to make necessary concessions that would anger people. If the government wanted to really monitor the trade they would, but there are all kinds of other problems like where does the $ come from and why is the system so inefficient. - +1 y
to change the government - a GREAT DEAL would have to happen. Governments would have to revise many systems and grow large backbones to deal with unethical practice like animal abuse around the world by other countries. Its not going to happen for a very very long time. Till then treat nature like the Native Americans do.

Animals have amazing colors and designs, and you can obviously wear a coat that isn't a real animal and I think that's fine, because an animal didn't have to die for that coat. Just like if I bought a wallet with zebra stripes on it or something. No animal died in the making of it...
