Why do I only like him when I'm around him?

I like this guy... kind of... I think when I'm around him I like him, but when I'm away I realize it's going no where and we're just friends... It's bad because I know for a fact he likes me. I just know that he's not my type deep down and I just can't really like him that much... but when I'm with him I'm stumbling over my words and I'm nervous and awkward! What do I do!?!?
