I used to be a dick to girls in my early 20s would make them more clingy then I'd feel bad and they would disperse like roaches when a light was turned on. Gotta find the right balance

There is a reason why girls always put quotes around the world "nice guy" nice guys just pretend to be nice or are white knights.

Yeah, more or less. There's a difference between a "nice guy" and someone who is respectful. Learn to make that distinction, aswell. Shouldn't be difficult. "Nice guys" aren't genuinely respectful.
