Signs Your Relationship Won't Last and It's Time to Move On

Warning: If you experience four or more of these things in a relationship, sit down and re-evaluate if it's really worth being in this relationship.

1. You're not trying to impress each other anymore

Don't get me wrong, being comfortable with someone is good but comfort-ability (is that a word) should have a limit. But if you like someone and the feelings are mutual, you try to do things for each other.

Even the little gestures matter. The little gestures might even be the most important.

2. The early relationship flukes...weren't actually flukes.

We all do some weird things early on in a relationship because it's actually scary to be fully you around someone you're trying to impress. But if, a few months in, you discover those odd habits are actually the person...maybe it isn't a good sign.

3. You feel awkward when you say I love you

Obviously this applies for when you've been in the relationship for a while. If it feels forced and uncomfortable, don't say it. Maybe it wasn't meant to be.

4. You're trying to change each other

You shouldn't ever force to change anyone. People can change themselves, but it takes time.

5. Hanging out is a duty

If you're only hanging out with the person you've committed to dating out of obligation or as a default for boredomness, where's the fun in that?

6. The smallest things annoy you

Especially if it's tiny things they mean to be nice but just end up annoying you anyway. Like they offer to cook and then they end up burning the eggs and instead of laughing you get annoyed. Take some time to wonder why you're really angry.

7. An argument feels like it could end in a break up

8. You're constantly sacrificing your feelings to please them

It's normal to put your feelings aside to make someone else happy but it's not normal if you constantly do that and you're constantly not happy.

9. You assess other people

If you find yourself window shopping for another potential partner your obviously not happy and you need to get out of the relationship.

10. Or you start missing your ex...or parts of them

You do not want to get back with your ex that cheated on you with Alex and you do not miss their brownies. You don't miss the stares and the dates. This is a sign you just want to revive old feelings and is also a sign that your current relationship is missing things that are really important to you.

11. You prefer time alone or with your friends than with them

You should definitely want to spend alone time with whoever you're dating! And if that's not the case, why are you with them at all?

12. You lowkey don't trust your partner

Trust is one of the most important values in a relationship and if it's lacking in your relationship, you better watch out because that's a massive red flag.

13. The future looks fuzzy

If you don't plan for there to be a meaningful future or you can't see them being there in your life for a while and meaning something, that is one of the worst signs.

14. They are more distant

"Trying to impress her" and
"Showing you love her" are not synonymous. Number one isn't right.

The words "I love you" don't feel forced if you are in a relationship with someone who is really compatible with you and you both give and take in the relationship. I'm big on compatibility. Through experience I discovered this is super critical to have compatibility in certain key areas.

Everyone has something that their SO annoys them about. People should pick their battles carefully, don't fight about the small stuff. This takes practice. You will not find a perfect partner, but you can find someone really good. The choice is up to you.

Perhaps this is an overreaction based on your own insecurities? Overreactions are typically based on insecurities.

That's not a healthy relationship. People need to learn more about what is healthy and what is not, what is worth sacrificing and what is not. Too much sacrificing can stem from poor self-knowledge and maybe poor boundaries.

People can work to rekindle the romance, if that's what they are missing. It takes 2 people to make a relationship work, but only 1 to mess it up.

With me and my wife we have more good than bad days. In fact it's mostly good or neutral days, not that many bad days. I think that's because we are very compatible with each other. We have also learned not to fight about the things that don't really matter. The relationship matters more to me, not the dirty dishes in the sink. So I just wash the dishes in the sink and don't fight about who did how much washing.

I was warned a long time ago that relationships die, not based on infedelity, but on how you fill the dishwasher. It's true: if, every day or two for a decade, you tell your partner (who empties the dishwasher, and knows what comes out dirty) that you don't care how they want it done, it's worse than being unfaithful one time.

Great for all of the topics except number one. I dont think that impressing should be something to specifically always be striving for. It should in my opinion just happen naturally and not be something to strive for. That is if its meant to be.

Gotta disagree with #11, or at least I would say that it should be more specific. It's perfectly fine and healthy to want time alone or time with friends. Never having that kind of time is an unhealthy thing in a relationship.

The relationship won’t last if you’re constantly arguing and disagreeing, if you put each other down, if one of you doesn’t put effort into the relationship anymore, if you can’t trust the other person, etc.

So, I imagine that the thing most people won't want to admit is that these signs inevitably develop in almost every relationship, especially in almost every marriage. Maybe long-term monogamous commitment and marriage aren't such good ideas...

Where did you find that information?
If these things are happening all the time in marriage, they were probably already happening early on in the relationship. That doesn't happen a lot, because otherwise nobody would get married. It would just be a big fight and strain. That's not the case for most marriages that I've seen.

Because they are doing it wrong, and more importantly, for the wrong reasons. Why do you think that rate has increased so significantly recently?
Nobody is willing to do it right, or wait for the right person anymore. Obviously that is not going to go well in marriage..
