Being Friendly vs. Being Interested: The Difference

Well, hello everyone.

It's me again.

Some people are naturally friendly with others, no matter who they’re talking to or interacting with, they show a very kind and nice personality. However ,the bad thing about that is that friendliness may be construed as interest.

And it's an extremely often phenomenon to happen to you, especially when you are interested yourself. While there are a few similarities between the two that can confuse you, there’s also a big and important difference between being friendly and flirty. Understanding how the 2 differ is the key to preventing yourself from getting in many...awkward and unwanted situations.

I've never been in this kind of situation myself, however, I've been a spectator to many these kind of incidents in the past. So, in this myTake I'll explain...

Being Friendly and Being Interested: The Difference

1. Comfort Level

When your crush is comfortable around you, it instantly makes you believe that they are interested towards you. And that might be actually true in most of the cases. But the difference is in the detail.

When he/she is extremely comfortable with you, when he/she treats you like a one of his/her buddies, when he/she doesn't care who he/she looks like around you it's a sign that he/she isn't interested in impressing you or making you like him/her, he/she sees you as a friend that can be free and comfortable with. Translate: Too comfortable ≠ Interested

2. He/She Talks To You About Others

At least not always...

There is a really big difference when someone is trying to make you jealous by referring to others as potential love interests and when he/she is just being casual and talks about his/her 'crushes'. If he/she is pretty much an open book when it comes to other relationships or people that he/she is into, if he/she is just gives too many information about his/her love life without wanting a jealous reaction form you that’s another obvious sign that he is just being a friendly towards you.

3. Physical Contact

People tend to believe that when someone touches them in general, is interested towards them.

Well...This isn't the only case.

When someone is into you, based on psychology, he/she tends to want to touch you and be closer to you, that's a fact. And to be more specific, the physical contact is always, no matter the person's personality, gentle and sincere when he/she has feelings for you. If he/she pats you on the back during hugs, or rubs your arm suddenly, or playfully hits you he/she is definitely just being friendly.

4. Conversations

While people many not understand it, flirty has a different agenda than friendly. Friendly conversations are more casual, more general, more in the heat of the moment while, in a flirty one, the person has a more intense interest in getting to know you and getting close. His/her interest is more towards you and who you are rather than what's going in your life right now.

I agree completely. Great take. This has happened to me before because I'm the friendly/extroverted type of person and ugh it's so frustrating. I once had to flat out reject a guy and it low-key broke my heart. Not in that moment, but after when I gave it some thought. I was kind of mean but I felt it was necessary. I looked him dead in the eyes and said "I don't like you" and that was the end of it thanks to God.

I think 3 is a tough one. Physical contact can be tricky. Some people are extroverted and touchy. They like to hug or do some of the things described here. Others are more sensitive to touch, so a playful hit or casual touch can be much more telling. I think the trick is to observe how that person is with others. Look for differences. If they are always touchy, it probably doesn't mean much when they touch you. If you are the only one they DON'T touch, that might be an indication. Likewise, if a girl is super shy and doesn't touch anyone, a casual touch could be significant.

I agree and disagree. People aren't so generalizable that they fit neatly into cookie cutter molds. One person's flirty behaviour is another person's friendly behaviour and vice versa. Its not always so black and white and there's little point in treating it that way without understanding that any 'rule' or 'signal' comes with loads of caveats.

Honestly I used to be more friendly to some girls, one in particular apparently because everyone pressured me to ask her out, even if I didn't really love her that way, I am not sure about the other way round

End result? Two weeks before getting dumped for a miscommunication error, we still talked, but moving schools and all I doubt I'll see her again
