Why you should be wary of people being friendly with you

I will keep this short.

This is an answer to the backlash I got from some wellthinkers" in my last question:

What are your reasons to be hostile towards someone who wants to help you?

This will be a short and I hope exhaustive explanation.

You should be wary of people being friendly with you because

- They might have an ulterior motive.

This goes without saying. I pretty much know that almost everyone approaches me because they want something from me, or want to exploit and use me. Chances are they'll do it to you too. Be vigil.

- They are useless

I detest useless people more than I detest evil and bad intentioned people. They serve no purpose, they waste your time, they take your time.

I only accept the friendship of useful people - for example, I keep close to this carrot top girl only because she writes my drafts and offered to buy me beer and smokes if I spend time with her - a fair pay for my time.

Do like me - time is money, don't give it away for free.

This is pretty much what I wanted to say. 90% of people you meet either will hurt you or worse - waste your time.

What to do then?

Simple. Block, discourage ignore. Resort to rougher measures if they don't relent. That should get you rid of them.

Remember that it's good to trust, but always better to not trust and strike pre-emptively.

Of course people who are friendly with you want something. But that doesn’t mean their motives are bad. Didn’t they teach you about the different types of relationships in nature? I’ll break it down for you.


Commensalism-This is when one organism isn’t affected while one benefits. Think about the time someone held a door for you or picked up something that you dropped. Or that time someone let you use them as a reference. Or something as small as giving a like on G@G.


Mutualism- In this type of relationship, both organisms benefit. Think about consensual sex. Both people benefit by giving eachother physical and emotional pleasure. This can extend to friendships, employment, etc. If both benefit you’re dealing with mutualism. Acts of kindness also fall into this category; helping out a stranger while also benefiting from the feeling of doing a good deed.


Parasitism-This is the relationship you want to avoid unless you’re carrying a child. In this relationship one organism is feeding off the other. So pregnancy is a basic example. But you also have your users and toxic people who will feed off of others until they have no use for them. So like keeping someone around because they buy you things or do you favors would be an example of a parasitic relationship.


So while it’s true most relationships deal with exchanges of some sort, it’s false that all of these relationships are bad. A stranger may be overly nice because they want your friendship, a date or maybe they’re having a bad day and being kind to others makes them feel better or they may in fact try to swindle you out of something. The only true way to know is have healthy boundaries, let a persons actions speak for them and learn how to spot the good relationships from the bad ones.

It's sometimes hurt me in the past but I've also met some great people just by being friendly and if I'm always mean then I would have never met them besides you say people don't give you anything, but what about the fact that they give their time to you and you give yours to them is that not a fair trade?

The difference is that my time has a value, theirs do not. They'd just waste it anyways.

How does their time not have value? I might not appear to have the same value as you but maybe I just finished an experiment that may lead us to the cure of cancer? I think most people would agree my time is a good deal more valuable than your's. Honestly, without knowing how I utilize all my time you can't judge it's value. I had a friend whose father invented some pretty cool things in his garage. He did all this while working full time at a job. His free time was extremely valuable.

This us a terrible way to love. Some people are shit. I don't think most people are. Of the people I've met, most are pretty good people. Some are excessively needy. Some don't have similar interests. Some are confrontational. Of those that are/were toxic I was able to deal with. One really didn't know that he was being toxic to me. When he discovered it, he changed and a few years later we were really good friends. We even worked together on our college applications.
