  Fair point. I think perhaps some people (such as myself) feel compelled to try and understand why bad things happen so we can regain a sense of agency and peace of mind. But I get what you're saying, you could be right.

  I've stated my side of it as much as I wish to, people can make what they wish of it. I don't have a body of scientific data to draw on for my claims, it's just my own observations and making my own deductions from them. If my theory is less compelling as a result, I'm satisfied enough with the outcome either way.

  Of course they shouldn't, but the fact remains that people often do. The purpose of my post was to try to understand what might go through a cheater's mind when they make that decision. It's not a judgement of whether or not they "should" act on it.
