So those of you who monitor my activity know I’m always talking about this movie, and it’s not necessarily because I think the characters are exceptional, even though they are decent. It’s mainly because I do not have time to watch more than one movie series at a time or even in a half year period and also because I believe you can learn thousands of social skills by watching movies with subplots and social battles.
Anyway, one of the reasons, the lead character of Teresa Mendoza has such an interesting relationship with her henchmen, James Valdez, is that the relationship is delayed and hard won, tapered by trial and tribulation, and based on social variables and not just superficial qualities like appearance or social manners. It’s is also a status game where the woman holds the power while the man works to protect and honour her.
What I realized is that loyalty and service is more romantic than a kiss on the cheek or a pat on the back and a woman is beautified through her compassion and mercy for other human beings. And that genuine friends love you for your inner qualities while fake friends view you as purely a circumstantial commodity. Also that a romantic relationship does not require perfectly linear cohesion and unitary goals and behaviours, but is more a result of varied and separated acts of social affection which is expressed in a myriad of forms and contexts, and that a romance is just like a lifestyle: it encompasses multiple faculties of life, and is not a single variable condition in which two people meet.
I would say those are the things that make this particular romance so memorable and emotionally intense. The connection is far more imaginative and illusory than it is accessible or effortless.
