There are times when we let the voices of others shape how we feel about someone, even though we don’t truly know them. It’s painful to realize that we allowed negativity, gossip, or hurtful opinions to cloud our judgment. We thought we knew the person, or we allowed ourselves to believe the worst because of the words of people who didn’t have our best interests at heart. It’s as if we let others’ hatred seep into our own hearts, and we began to see that person through a lens of unfairness and anger. And then, somewhere along the way, it hits us—the truth. We realize that our thoughts were not our own, that we allowed outside noise to influence how we saw someone, and it’s a crushing feeling. The regret starts to build as we understand that we didn’t give them the chance they deserved. The realization that we misjudged someone because of external pressures can sting deeply, making us wish we had been stronger, more thoughtful, and less susceptible to the negativity around us. We’re left with the painful truth that our hearts weren’t as open as they should’ve been, and we long to correct the mistake.
