What are the signs an ex girlfriend is stringing you along for her own emotional support or safety net?

What signs should I be looking for? Why do girls do this to men when they know it hurts them?

girls like to feel needed and i think that when they hurt you and then make you feel better it makes them feel wanted and same thing the other way. girls will probably try to guilt the guy into feeling bad and helping them just to have a sense of security. its pretty bad. (i hope this makes sense)

Oh it makes plenty of sense. Thank you! This is exactly what i'm going through. My ex is severely depressed from her own choices after our split and is using me as a safety net to comfort her... it's hurting me though cause I still need to move on with life. I'm feeling pulled down and used. I feel terrible for her but I also can't be the one helping her when i need to move on with life. It seems to me that she's getting the best of both and I'm getting nothing in return.

yeah, don't let her take advantage of you, cause even though its nice you're helping her, you should always come first. its probably best distance yourself from her so she doesn't use you any longer.
