Girl rejected me, should I keep distance?

OK so girl said she used to like me, we met three years ago and she suggested we date once but I wasn't keen at that time due to other issues. Now she's placed me firmly in the 'best friend' zone as I told her recently how much I liked her but i've screwed up in the past. She's tried to stop talking to me before as she says I frustrate her and make her angry sometimes, but she has always come back, so I suspect she must at least still have some (if little) feelings for me. Im still pretty hurt she rejected me so should I just keep my distance? I waited 3 days till she sent me a message asking if i was ignoring her and we had a short convo again, but i dont know if i can chase her and knowingly get rejected again, so im trying to better myself, gym, work etc, although im more worried that by keeping my distance she will forget about me and never want to speak to me again.

It's normal to feel that way. Its like having to sit next to a person who just pissed on you. I suggest you heavily decrease the amount of time you hang around her.

But if you are going to do this be honest. Tell her that you feel discomfortable when around her and you need space to heal. No one wants to keep staring at their own failures.

If she tries to tell you that hanging with her more will help, she's lying and only thinking about herself. Be careful when you try to peel yourself away, she may try and flirt with you to make you stick around, don't fall for it.

Don't approach her directly with an offer that she can say yes or no to like that again. Do your own thing and when you spend time around her, make your interest obvious. Like a soft but consistent persistence that lets her know that you're still there. She can decide whether to let you sway her heart but for the time being, lower the heat but keep it alive.

She doesn't want to be hurt. If she wasn't interested she wouldn't care if u were ignoring her.

She doesn't want anything more than friends, but she likes the friendship, so after a bit of time that's why she keeps talking to you again. If you want something more, then keep your distance, yeah.
