Why did my ex-boyfriend tell me he really wants to be friends?

We dated for a month, and he broke up with me. He wanted to end it for a number of reasons: he didn't have enough time for a girlfriend, he's scared of me, I freaked him out , I'm supposedly obsessed with him and we moved too fast. Okay, let me explain. After our last encounter, we had oral sex. He said he really wanted to see me again but he wouldn't set a date and we didn't talk for a week. I decide to visit him at work since we hadn't talked and he blew me off and told me not to come back there because that's not the time or place to talk. I was really upset because I met a great, smart, motivated guy who's acting distant. He told me he really liked and wants to have a meaningful relationship with me. He admitted that it was his fault we moved to fast too. He decided to play a prank on me and tells me he's moving away and never coming back. I got furious and verbally abused him. A day later, I apologized and he revealed that he's not going anywhere and it was a prank. This was my first boyfriend by the way. He told me he no longer wanted to be with me because I scared him for the way I talked to him and he thinks I'm obsessed with him because I tried talking to him at work. But he kept saying he really wants to stay friends and he'll be there for me, to call him or text if I need anything from him. I just told him I want nothing from him. He was the first guy I got sexual with as well. Why did he offer to be friends and to contact him if I need anything? I have no trace of him on my phone by the way. He really devastated me and made me angry. We haven't spoken since. We saw each other at work and our mouths just dropped open but no words came out, just smiled at each other and he watched me go up the stairs. I looked at the security camera and he was still standing there. It looked like he was gonna come up but decided not to. I don't know he did that either.
