do anything and everything in your power to get him to smile. a smile is the best cure for this. for example when you or him gets home one day walk straight up to him without saying a word wrap him up in the biggest hug you can put all you weight on him and tell him you love him and crack a joke about him like maybe I love you even with your weird shaped head I don't know but don't say anything that might bring up memories about his friend. he'll mention his friend when he is ready to talk about it.

I can't speak for anyone else, as it's all highly variable on the individual, but the best thing to do for me is distractions. Propose actives, watch a movie, play a game, go out and do something, pretty much anything but actually talking about it. I find it's easiest for myself to vent about really serious subjects when I feel ready for it. A brief offer to talk about it is nice, but don't keep pushing if I say no, give it time.

take him out even if he dosent want to it will take his mind off things or maybe ask him what the problem is and maybe try and fix it yourself , for a man to be down he clearly isn't happy , deppression is hard to get out of so you need to break it a. s. a. p exercise , good diet , love of a woman can all help 😉
I don't know different things for different people but for me really if I lost a close friend then I would want time and space for a little bit and then a small surprise with something cooked by my girlfriend and a nice date
space as much as needed. and then surprise them with only a smile on one afternoon.
Typically a balance of activities to keep my mind off of whatever maybe causing the feeling of sadness with a moment or too of remeberance for the person who has passed and time to myself.
