I think different scenarios have different solutions.

sometimes I will try to joke around to cheer her up, others I might just be there to let her vent or talk it out, others I might just give her space

Try to comfort her within reason. At least find out what is bothering her lol. If you act like a jerk who doesn’t care about her feelings then she will hold that over your head just saying 🤷🏼‍♀️😅
