You're not a terrible person. He seems quite hostile. I have this myself where I try to understand where everyone is coming from. It's a good trait, but a bit bad for us because we start excusing every bad behavior someone puts onto us. We think... oh they're just mean to me because they're tired or they got trauma.. whatever. But we have to think about ourselves too, how their actions can affect us. So far, you don't like the way he is treating you and you try to talk it out. He shuts you down and it escalates. I think you guys can probably do with some space from each other, if you guys are very serious couple. Try some therapy. But if it is a constant thing that happens through the relationship, then I suggest you forget about him. There are men who will treat you better out there girl. Don't settle for less.
Your guy might be very lonely or simply a manipulator. Just test him if he's loyal or not. If he's not then dump his ass.
I'm the female version of that guy but I became like that because my exes broke my trust. It was a sneaky betrayal. That's when I started to behave so mean and lash out at small things. Then I realized that they're not worth my affection or even anger because anger also meant love. Indifference is true form of giving up. So I broke up and never accepted them back.
Leave him. Stay with him and it'll just get worse. AAAANNNNDDD, you'll be miserable. And if dude wants to throw an tantrum, after you tell him, call the babysitters on him, they'll have a nice bed for him.

You are not a terrible person. He is way too sensitive and do not know how to deal with things himself. You're not his punching bag. Maybe he has something serious goin on that you may not know. Also these 're red flags of something wrong that he's hiding
I usually lighten up my man's mood with my delicious home-made meals & baked goodies. "The best way to a man's heart is through his stomach." ;)
Tell him what's he's doing his wrong and take a week break
