Yes, of course.

Does this mean I'm going to jump in at every little thing? Of course not.

Most women can handle 99+% of what they deal with on a normal basis all by themselves. But when those rare situations happen when they're in real danger, then of course I'm going to step in and protect them.

When I walk down the street with a woman, I automatically walk on the outside (closer to the street) and half a step back. This allows me to see threats (a person, a stray dog, a car, a kid on a bike, etc.) coming and take some action.

If I have to drive to a sketchy area, I'll have her stay in the car until I come around and let her out, and when we get back to the car, I put her in first and then go around to my side.

At a restaurant, I know where the exits are, and I sit on the outside facing the main entrance.

With my guy friends - many of whom have military backgrounds, and most of whom I've done at least some training with - this is just automatic. Whether there are 2, 3, or 4 of us, we automatically know what to do and just do it, because we've trained together. Women and kids are kept together in the center, and the guys form a perimeter around them, and manage their sector of responsibility.

I don't expect the average guy to know how to work with a team or anything, but the rest of the stuff should be common sense, and even for guys who don't practice it, I think most still understand that it's their job to protect the women (and children) they're with.

I was taught to. However, I'm questioning if modern women are even worth it.

Women usually just use me and then get rid of me when I'm no longer useful.

Why should I defend someone who , under different circumstances, would just tell me to go fuck myself.

Also, i thought gender roles are being abolished... something about equality.

Men of my family? Yes. Like women in my family who are expected to stand by their men to their last breath.

It's a traditional view we kept but also one which I think doesn't apply to the entire society anymore. So I refuse to generalize.

As long as those women are willing to protect them back then yes.
I know for instance since you mentioned family that my mom would do anything to keep me safe and I would do the same for her and more.
And any woman in my life is someone I'm inclined to protect should the need arise but not equally. Basically you need to earn my interest in protecting you I won't do it just because you're a woman

Yes, also other men if they are in serious trouble. I'm talking about serious trouble though like if a house is on fire or they're being attacked by a criminal, not butting into a conflict that poses no real danger to the person.

Well, I would not hold it against a man who acts cowardly in this situation. I just think men, at least, should strive not to cower in these contexts. Ideally, women strive not to as well. We all try to protect each other.

After all, if a woman cowers away from dangerous situations, say her husband is not around or even dead, and she has children. She needs to be brave and strong to protect her children. So I think even women should ideally be quite strong.

That said, to re-emphasize, I do not mean being nosy and overprotective. There's a difference between protecting someone when they're in serious danger vs. butting in and blindly taking their side in a conflict like some white knight eager to rescue a damsel from distress and take her side just because she's a woman. I do not approve of that and I think that's more like intrusive virtue-signaling and infantilizing adults than truly protecting people when they actually need it.

Anyone should protect those that they care about. Men are usually more able to defend against other men than women are because of the strength differential, but then if the woman is a UFC fighter she might not need protecting.

If girlfriend is in need the man should step in, and same goes the other way around too. It's not men's responsibility to protect women, just because they're women, but it's a YOUR responsibility to protect your family irrespective of your gender.
